Going to NYC in July...YAY!!! Going with my my Mom and 11 year old daughter who is a theatre bug!!!! What show would everyone suggest???? We like musicals.

Choices Newsies, Spiderman or Sister Act. Taking all suggestion for the entire city....Bring Them On. :)

Thanks in advance.

How long are you staying in NYC? If for just one day, I'd pick Newsies. Haven't seen the other two choices tho' -- so not a really informed suggestion :-). If you are staying for longer than one day, you might try going to the TKTS booth in Time Square and pick up discounted tickets to one of the other choices.

Whatever you do -- enjoy!

I am just going for the weekend...can't wait!!! My Mom is taking my daughter on an intergenerational trip to the city. They do a behind-the-scenes of a Broadway show which is super cool. We are still waiting to hear which show they will be going to...so, so lucky!!!

I was pushing for Sister Act but just started reading about Newsies and it sounds pretty good.

Can't wait to hear the feedback from those of you in the know. :)

I heard Newsies is fantastic - I would choose that show from the three you mentioned.

What about Wicked? Is it still playing? We loved it!

I saw Wicked in NYC about 5 years ago and she is seeing it in Ohio in June. My Mom has already seen Mary Poppins but I would love to see that sometime.

Keep on posting and tell us some other things to do too!!!

Another Question: Are the Half Price TKTS booths still up? If so, are the lines still crazy??

Planning a trip home in early June.

Newsies is supposed to be amazing, and I've heard Sister Act is really good too.

DON'T see Spiderman. It's awful.

Yes, they're still up...and still crazy depending on when you go, like a holiday or a weekend. Weeknights aren't so bad. There's another booth in South Street Seaport too. And they now have an iPhone app so you can see what's on the boards every night. :thumbsup2

Yes for the Times Sq one but, as above, go to the one down by John St., there's rarely ever any line and you can do matinee a day in advance down there too.

Thanks!

I was wondering about the one in Brooklyn since I'll be staying in Bklyn Heights. I was hoping it wasn't a gamble but you never know!

Yes, the TKTS booth is still there -- but not really half-price. More like 30 - 40 percent off. Lines can be crazy, so you'll need to plan accordingly if you want to use it. I've only gone to the one in Times Square, but know there is one down in at South Street Seaport too -- maybe that one isn't as busy????

Newsies, hand down! I saw it w/ my 13yo dd last weekend. It is AMAZING! One of the best shows I've seen. Good luck finding tickets! Newsies is rarely at the TKTS booth.

Robin - if you're going to be here for a bit and your son is with you, you might get better results with student rush tix. In summer it might be harder but like I said if you'll be here so it's not like you're only here for two nights and thus can only go to a show X day, and because you'll surely find other stuff to do if it doesn't work out... it's cheaper and you can get into shows that aren't at TKTS.

True for anyone - student rush or lottery can work, and you can put in at more than one if there's more than one of you to go stand wherever, but only if you're flexible and ok with missing out on a night if you don't get anything.

Out of those I have only been to Sister Act a short time ago at the Broadway Theatre. It was very enjoyable. I would recommend it. Going to see Lion King in a few weeks.

Student Rush's site looks good, thanks for the info.

This will be the first time I ever paid for a Bway show, we used to get trade when I was in radio and now I see WHY so many tried to get them from me. :scared1: Highway robbery prices!! :headache:

Wait - there is no site.

I just tried googling what I assume you did and came up with some .org thing - I'd steer clear.

Student rush tix are like lottery tix, but you often have a better shot at them because you need a student ID (the person with the student ID can buy 2 tix under that ID, the other person doesn't need a student ID).

You don't need to sign up for anything.

Some shows don't do student rush, but a lot do. Some have slightly different policies.

Most you go to the box office when it opens in the am or in the afternoon (some start the deal in the morning, some like 3 hours before curtain, official show websites or playbill.com should have specifics per show), and if there are tickets available, you can have them for like $30 a piece. They're often very, very good seats. Best bargain on B'way.

Same as lottery rush, which you do the same way and they draw names from a hat from everyone put their names in, right before the show. That, you don't need any student ID for, so it's more competitive, but you can put into one show's lottery, and your son could put into another and then you each stand one place and hope one of you wins.

Here, found the Playbill linky - that lists most shows' policies, whether they do student rush and what time to show up for student or lottery.

I wouldn't count on a lottery, though. Shows like Wicked, Book of Mormon, and Newsies have them, but they usually draw huge crowds (Mormon's was so big half the crowd had to stand across the street), so the chances of winning can be pretty slim. You can only enter yourself once, so if there well over 100 people there...the odds aren't in anyone's favor.

They're certainly worth a shot (I won at Wicked), but it's best to have a backup plan for another show if you don't win.

If it's tdf.org, that's completely legit. They offer discounts to students and teachers. They also run the TKTS booth.

No, of course TDF is fine it was like studentrush.org and seemed to want money or signups to reveal "secrets" of getting tickets.

Yeah, lottery can be a longshot, but depends on the show and the day but if you have a couple of people (not to double enter, for one to enter one show's lottery while the other enters another's at another theatre) you double your chances of getting into something. Also student rush has better odds of nabbing stuff, so if you can try that and lottery as fallback, even better shot.

As I said, if it were someone coming for 2 or 3 days who has to see a show on X day or wants a specific show only, these are NOT good options.

Poster I brought it up for used to live here so I assumed she was visiting friends/family and stuff, hence I said if she was staying a bit and would likely have other stuff to do and be comfortable trying her luck a few days because she could go do other stuff, then I think it's a good option.

I have been off the grid for a few days but thanks for all the insight. I have been reading about Newsies and I am excited.

My next question...any feedback on using broadway box? Are the coupon codes legit?

I know Newsies won't be discounted but wondering about catching a matinee of something else, maybe a little older would be an option. Neither of us have seen Mama Mia which I heard is fun!

So tell me about broadway box!

Thanks.
