Attn. Light Sleepers: Don’t stay by the elevators at BWI

Hello. We just got back yesterday from a 12 day trip to Disney! We stayed at Ft. Wilderness, BWI, and GF. Ft. Wilderness was wonderful—lots of towel animals—and GF was lovely (we stayed in the building they were remodeling—Conch Key—so it was a little loud some mornings—drilling and scraping, but at least it was expected). BUT, although BWI was pretty nice, never stay right by the elevators if you’re not a deep sleeper!

We stayed at BWI three days, in a room on the third floor right by the elevators, and after the first night, we wanted to change our room very badly. There was a loud mechanical sound—almost like a growl—that we heard every five minutes or less all night. We tried to talk to someone the next morning (the room also smelled like smoke) and they told us that the smoke smell and the mechanical sound would be taken care of. The manager ASSURED us that it was not the elevator. That day, the smoke smell was taken care of, but not the mechanical sound. We asked about it at the front desk, and the same manager said that a staff person would be checking out the sound later that evening (after 6). Well, once again, the noise was still there when we got back later that night…probably around 10. We talked to a night manager about the noise, and he immediately guessed that the sound was the elevator. He told us that it bothers some people—sometimes even five to ten rooms down from the elevator—and that it doesn’t bother others. Consequently, I felt like the day manager had been putting us off. Of course, the night manager told us that there were no other rooms available with 2 queens (there were 4 adults—my sister, my parents, and me) and he offered us a fan—which didn’t really help much. But we gave up complaining about it, since by that time, we felt we’d wasted a lot of time trying to solve the problem. It was very frustrating. So, I thought I would at least warn other people about this potential problem (my mom and my sister could hardly sleep, and it occasionally woke me up as well—and I don’t really consider myself that light of a sleeper).

That's always my first request for any hotel stay. I learned my lesson many years ago after several loooong nights next to the elevators at the NY Hilton.

We had the same problem at BWI on the 5th floor, room 5274 back in December. It never lets up - all night long, every few minutes. I think it's not just normal elevator noise, it's a maintenance issue they're not addressing.

I agree. I've stayed in rooms by elevators before and never been this bothered. Actually, come to think of it, we were on the fifth floor too--room 5287 (I got the floor wrong in my first post). I wish they could/would do something to make it a little better at least. My family was really not happy with the way the management handled our complaint either. It's very disappointing to have that kind of experience at a Deluxe.

We were in the BWV last summer on the 5th floor right by the elevators. It is a pool view room. The elevator runs right by the head of the bed in the master bedroom. All night long up and down for a week. I had to take sleepers. We got the pool view we requested but the 2br for 500+ a night was hardly worth it. I should have had them move me day1 but toughed it out. The whole experience just soured me on BWV. Will never go there again
