attire in the restaurants

I read in my passporter that the restaurants want a more formal attire. If I understand correctly they want no shorts or jeans in the restaurants. Is this true for breakfast and lunch also, or is it only for dinner? We're from Hawaii where we live in shorts. I can't imagine dressing up to eat and then going back to change into more comfortable clothes. ::MinnieMo

DCL asks that no jeans and no shorts be worn in any of the restaurants for dinner. Breakfast and lunch are much more casual and shorts and jeans would be acceptable for those meals.

Palo, the adults only restaurant, asks that shorts/jeans be worn at no time in that setting. So, Champagne Brunch is a different story.

I wore capri outfits several nights and felt very comfortable. On formal night I wore black jersey pants and a glittery top with dressy sandals.

DH wore dress slacks since he lives in jeans and doesn't like Dockers. For all nights except formal and semi formal on the Magic Dockers and a nice Polo shirt would be acceptable.

I also wore a nice capri set to Palo for Champagne Brunch.

From my visits to Hawaii, I recall that many restaurants are open to the outside, and it can be quite warm while dining. Even completely enclosed restaurants, such as Roy's on Maui, had a toasty interior temperature.

In contrast, the dining rooms on the Disney Magic were downright cold. I was glad to be wearing long pants!

Thanks everybody. If I had to buy that many pairs of pants I had a year to find them. Anyway, it's good to know that day dining is much more casual. One more question....on formal night is a tie mandatory? My DH doesn't own one and none of us know how to tie one. Are we in big trouble. We can just skip that formal night if it becomes too much of a hassle.

What about kids? We're cruising in August and I was planning to dress my grandson in nice khaki or dk blue shorts and polos or tropical/Hawaiian style button-up shirts?

Since the boys rarely if ever wear dress pants at home (we're a casual clothes family) I really don't want to have to buy them each 3 pairs of dress pants ... I can't get away with a single pair each as I'm sure they'll get dirty immediately.

Or would dressy shorts be okay for PC and AP and have long pants for Lumiere's (sp?).

Thanks!

All three main dining rooms on the Disney Magic have the same suggested dress. The suggested dress varies by day, not by dining room. There are four casual nights, one tropical night, one semi-formal night, and one formal night, regardless of your rotation. For example, Thursday night is semi-formal in all three dining rooms.

DCL suggests certain attire, and DCL asks for no jeans or shorts. Most passengers dress in the spirit of DCL's suggestions. There are always some passengers who ignore the suggestions -- and they're allowed into the dining rooms anyway. (There are mixed signals as to whether shorts are or are not appropriate for the tropical night.)

In the end, you and your family have to decide what is and is not in the spirit of DCL's suggested dress.

We're doing the 3 day Wonder ... not a 7 day Magic cruise ... and I understand the 3 day is more casual than the 7 day.

The adults won't be wearing shorts/jeans and I'm getting summer dresses for my granddaughter, but given we're going in August I would think dress shorts (pleated khaki shorts) and dress shirts for the boys would be okay ... the guys look really handsome dressed this way (Easter clothes).

Hey, years ago it was the normal to dress boys in short pants until they became men, LOL!

The vast majority of men wear a tie on formal night (and to a lesser extent on semi-formal night too) -- along wiith a suit, a tuxedo, or at least dress slacks and a blazer.

Think of DCL's suggested dress as friendly suggestions to help you pack and wear appropriate clothing, not as some sort of mandatory dress code to make you miserable.

Don't skip the formal night. Get into the spirit of the evening by dressing up. But if your definition of "dressing up" does not include a tie, don't worry about it.

In your earlier post, you mentioned Lumiere's, not Triton's, so I assumed you would be on the Disney Magic.

It's true that the Disney Wonder doesn't not have a formal night or a semi-formal night. DCL suggests jackets be worn for dinner at Triton's but I understand this is widely ignored.

I don't see any problem with "dressy shorts" on kids under ten, but others would probably disagree with me.

Sorry, I get Lumiere's/Triton's mixed up. And my grandson's will be 9 and 10 ... still "little kids" ... at least to me.

On our last cruise, there was a boy around the same age as your grandsons seated near us who wore shorts and a character (not Disney) picture T-shirt almost every night at dinner. IMHO, I thought he should at least be wearing a different shirt. Your grandsons should look fine in dressy shorts and button front shirt.

I dressed my 4 year old daugher in a dress one night (that was all she would let me, she hates dresses) and the rest of the time she wore pants. I got her changed into shorts right after dinner so she was able to get 2 dinners out of each pair of pants. I actually did the same thing, I didn't want to pack more than 3 or 4 pairs of pants each!

We just returned from the 5/22 cruise and while we were dressed appropriately we did observe a few people wearing jeans and t-shirts on both formal and semi-formal nights at the resteraunts for dinner. I don't believe anyone said a word to them.

A tie is not necessary but a nice polo shirt and docker type pants are acceptable.
