To sonya francisco:
I understand where you are coming from, with my first son the ADHD was very apparent due to the hyperactivity. I had no problem with the medication because I could see immediate improvement in him and he himself felt better about school etc.
With my 2nd son ( who doesnt have hyperactivity) I couldnt believe it when the teachers started recommending to have him checked for ADD, he was nothing at all like my first son. I DID NOT WANT TO MEDICATE HIM. I thought they were mistaken, eventually a doctor took the time to explain the differences in ADD/ADHD and my son went from D's and E's in school to straight B"s. The point I'm trying to make is DONT MEDICATE UNTILL YOU FEEL SURE! Go to another doctor and another doctor if you have to, untill they explain everything and untill you feel comfortable that giving your child the medication is what you want to do. You are his advocate and you make the final decision. The school cannot make you medicate.I have a friend who controls her sons ADD through diet. It works for her but wouldnt work for me. There are so many variables in the mix of ADD. Behavior modification techniques, many things for you to try. In my case, medicine was the best answer, but its not the only answer. I wish you the best of luck. Take care
To Aahhmom1- You simply don't understand the impulsivity factor of ADD. They CANNOT CONTROL THEMSELVES SOMETIMES. They just REACT. You wouldnt tell a blind person they could see if the tried hard enough, or a deaf person that they could hear if they tried harder yet you think if only the parents would discipline that child he could control himself just like every other kid. I'm glad you don't have an ADD/ADHD child. Try a little understanding. Trust me when i say, most of these kids know they are different and would like nothing better than to be like everyone else.
