ATT: DVCers that choose NOT to "Member Cruise"

we aren't going because of the dates but also, the first member cruise we went on wasn't that great. The entertainment was pretty bad (with the exception of the hercules show). and it just didn't seem as kid friendly (dance party with the characters at 10pm) We have been on other disney cruises that were much better. It was nice having 2 days at castaway cay and meeting some of y'all but... we'd rather go to disney or vero. maggie

First, the timing is bad. Start of school for my 3 kids and myself.

Second, points for 5 of us would be huge, would have to book 2 cat 10's .

Third, the itinerary. Just not that carzy about Key West.

Well the above is the main reason we are not going. We don't have school age children and immediately thought the date selection was done to discourage families. I don't wish to cruise during hurricane season especially after this years storms and a prediction of 10 more years of the same type of weather. I agree the timing is lousy but how better to fill a ship during this hard to sell time frame than a member cruise with higher costs.

Just came back from September cruise and am not anxious to do another September cruise in this lifetime! I loved the 2003 Member Cruise. It was loads of fun and they showered us with gifts and we had a ball, but this one is many more points and the time is not good. Not going!

We are still trying to decide, but it doesn't look promising for us.

Hurricane season? We got back from the 9/11 "Magical Mystery Cruise" on the Magic. We had a blast even if Ivan and Jeanne caused changes in our itinerary. Hurricane season doesn't bother me.

Points? We used most of this year's points for our recent cruise and banked the remainder (Aptil use year) hoping to go to DL next summer/fall. Can't figure out how to stretch the points for both. Now can I afford more points to swing it?

Time frame? My niece/goddaughter is getting married next October so plans for her shower etc. may interfere. And at work we are gearing up for our accreditation survey that is due in October/November.

School? No kids here so that is not a worry.

Cash? Hmm. Haven't won the lottery so that may be out too.

At least they gave us enough notice this time so that my plans aren't already set for next year.

Guess we can look for even higher prices / points next time. So much for the possibility of an economical member gathering.

Actually, I'd love to do the members cruise (I think). It just that I've never been on any cruise before, and I just have this picture of a ship being a "glorified" floating hotel. In my heart, I know the Disney cruises aren't this way...but that is the picture I have in my mind.

Another reason I haven't seriously considered it is that I really have no one to travel with on a cruise. My Mom, who is 81, is my usual companion at WDW, but I doubt she could take the walking that sightseeing at the Ports O' Call would require, as she uses a wheelchair at WDW, and many foreign ports just aren't that wheelchair frendly if you want to see a lot of things.

I think it would be fun but the dates are very bad, well actually impossible for us. Plus we went on the Magic 7 night western this past July and had a blast. It will be a few more years before we make cruise plans again.

Yes, this is the proven business model for DVC member events. Limit the event to less than 1% of the total membership in order to guarantee sellout of an over-priced event. When DVC pushes event pricing and attendance limits (like the MH event), they end up hawking tickets to the opening day.

I'll wait (along with many other DVC members) for an alternate business model before I participate.

You know, tjkraz, member gatherings don't have to be run by Disney. Look at Gay Days - totally organized outside of Disney. Maybe you and Johnnie can set up something that retains the "bonding" and "togetherness" without costing an arm and a leg. You can call it "DVC Moo-Fest" and put a cute cow on the T-shirts!

PS We ended up deciding NOT to do the cruise; this was not due to cost, but to uncertainties in our vacation schedules that made such an irreversible commitment of points a bad idea.

Don't think I haven't thought of that.

I just have my doubts about the sincerity of people who say "we do it to meet and mingle with fellow members."

Granted these boards only represent a small portion of the DVC membership, but it's been a long time since I've seen anyone here even organize an informal, free, member get together. Seems like December would be a great time to do just that, but those discussions long ago fell by the wayside.

We would love to go on the Members Cruise but timing is everything!

1. We are already going on the Wonder for a 3 day cruise in March. We are going with DH's Sister, Brother in Law and their two boys.

2. School starts for my boys the last week in August.

3. Both my boys play football and Labor Day Weekend is opening weekend for them.

Hopefully it wil work out another time!!

I think most of us on this thread expected that the cruise would sell out quickly. The sellout required a very small number of the total membership.

DrTomorrow--PS We ended up deciding NOT to do the cruise; this was not due to cost, but to uncertainties in our vacation schedules that made such an irreversible commitment of points a bad idea.

As cost was not an issue, you may have paid cash for the cruise so that you didn't put your points in jeopardy.

Nothing like a bunch of like-minded folks having fun at their favorite vacation spot!
With such a large number of members, it's unlikely we would agree on everything. I don't need to be a DVC member to understand the magic of Disney--I had the Disney fever way back in the non-Disney resort stays. I feel fortunate to own DVC. And, my cup runs over with wishfulness that DVC will provide us with better discounts/member events in the future. Until then, all I have to say is....MMMMOOOOOOO!!!!
