Hi! Please forgive me if this is old news or if I am mistaken. I have not looked at the DVC member website for the concierge collection in a long time, but I just noticed now that Atlantis, Paradise Island in the Bahamas is now listed. I remember many of us on here waiting for it to come on the list and then we were told it was not going to be available because they could not work it out. Am I reading this right, is it now available through concierge and has anyone here booked via points? I know it is not the best use of points, but I am actually considering it. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks as always for your help!

Patty :)

Not a place I'd ever choose to visit again. I went there as a reward trip from work and found the place to be very lacking. I don't like being on an island and needing a map to find the way to the beach. I don't like being at a resort and having the beach-view outdoor bar close at 5 p.m. while full of people and being hosed out of the place before our overpriced drinks were finished. The casino cut, if I recall correctly, was high too... It's plastic and fake, and IMHO, the only place that does plastic and fake well is Disney. Can you tell I didn't like it??? :rotfl2:

It is probably a place you should experience once to form your own opinion, but I think I'd be ticked if I traded my points and experienced the Atlantis I experienced.

I saw that also! Finally, we've had friends go who said it's wonderful. We love being outdoors... I love casinos!!

I'm calling today :cool1:

Actually, it's not that bad on points. I called last week inquiring about prices in June, the cheapest room was $429/nt. The beach towers are only 50 points/night.

Atlantis is a different type of vacation, we went and stayed at the Harborside, that is the only way I would go back. To have the luxury of having a "home away from home" but still being able to enjoy the pools, slides, beaches, etc, and then getting away from it all back to the harborside is the best of both worlds!! We were thinking of sneaking down for a long weekend, and I was able to get a 1 bedroom deluxe at the harborside for $825.00 for the 3 nights, late October, I thought that was a pretty good price, just couldn't work out the airfare, could fly from JFK for 74 each way, the day before and the day after when we would need to go, and the days we could go would cost over 600 each in airfare!!! big differenc

5 points - don't you mean 50 points?

DVC always charges outsiders more than they do DVC resorts.

Thank you everyone for your responses. Yes, I am sure Doggierunner meant 50 points. Having never been to Atlantis, that does sound pretty reasonable to me. I am curious if anyone here has stayed at the beach towers and can give their opinion on them as far as location to the main pools and activities, food etc. Also, I am curious if anyone else is planning on staying there on points.

nono: I am sorry you did not have a good experience there. I have heard it is surely an expensive place and to be rushed with food or drinks is terrible. I am sorry to hear that.

Clarabelle: Just curious if you preferred Harborside better just because it was more like DVC with cooking facilities and more room than a regular hotel room or if there were definite other advantages to Harborside over the other towers.

Thanks again for the responses and if anyone else has anything to add, I would love to hear it. Also, has anyone actually gone in the summer and do you think there would be availability for 2006? I have never used the Concierge Collection and wonder how easy it is to get a popular place like this through them. THANKS!

when traveling to places outside of disney... do the points like this one (50/night) stay the same regardless of the time of year you go or what day of the week it is?

dcibrando: As I stated I do not have any experience with booking Concierge Collection, however I can tell you the points do change according to water view(if available), time of year, and sometimes the day of the week. I noticed for Atlantis they ask for more points for later in the week through the weekend and points do vary throughout the year. HTH

disgirl: We stayed at the Beach Towers about 4 years ago and loved it. Note that the Beach Towers are not the fancy towers you see in all the pictures (I think those are the Royal towers), but the Beach Towers are, as the name implies, right on the beach. They are older, and also the least expensive. There is also a third set of towers, I think called the Coral Towers, roughly in between the other two in location and price.

Our room had a great view- because of the shape of the beach there, the rooms seem to look right down the beach with a great view of the ocean. The Royal Towers on the other hand are quite a way set back from the beach.

From the Beach Towers you can get to the other public areas (such as the restaurants and casino) by indoor corridors if you want, but the best way is through the outdoor grounds, which are spectacular. Right outside the Beach Towers are a pond with sea turtles, a grotto which leads to the beach past a very large aquarium which seems carved in the rock. The lazy river, the double slide, and a couple of pools are also nearby. What is not close is the Mayan temple which has the really big slides, but then it is not really close to anything.

The grounds are amazing, there are MANY pools, streams, unexpected sea life displays, etc., all in a lush naturalistic setting. There are many little interesting nooks and crannies everywhere you turn. And the aquariums which recreate sunken Atlantis have to be seen to be believed; it as if you are walking on ancient streets which lead out to the ruins where the fish are. In my opinion Atlantis is way more elaborate than any single Disney resort.

It is, however, quite expensive, especially the food (with a couple of exceptions. The snack bar on the beach right next to the Beach Towers had good food at a fairly reasonable price). There are only a few places within walking distance offsite where you will find less expensive food.

Finally, let me make a couple of comments about Harborside. We took the tour, and while they were nice we really didn't feel like we were at Atlantis when we were there and prefered our regular hotel room in the Beach Tower. For example, there are no lush walkways with ponds as you exit the building. It is sort of like OKW with the get away from it all feel, but it just felt remote. It is on the other side of the marina from Atlantis proper, and it is a shuttle ride (or fairly long walk) to get there from the rest of the resort, and no where near the beach. For example, there is another resort hotel next door to the main facility which is much closer to Atlantis than Harborside. Different strokes for different folks.

The points list is on the member website. I called today to reserve and they aren't taking reservations yet.

We can't wait. We were going to go and pay cash.... this is great. We have friends who went with kids and suggested the full week... so we're planning 10 days at WDW followed by a week at Atlantis.

When I called this week to find out how to book the resort I was told that Atlantis had pulled out of their agreement with DVC and that they were not exchanging. Has anyone else been advised of this?

The points start in Oct and they aren't taking reservations yet, that's a little strange. Actually the points are far lower than I guessed they would be. I'm on record as saying I thought some choices would be 100 points per night or more. Lets explore what happened. Atlantis Harborside was on the DVC II exchange list and removed "for lack of availability" when anyone with half a brain would have known it wouldn't be available for a couple of years, I can explain why if needed. Then the resort itself was listed as a CC option but then removed for unspecified reasons. Now the resort is back on at a level below many of the predictions. My guess is that DVC baulked at the rates and said no thank you and Atlantis backed down. It'd sure be nice if DVC got a backbone in arranging these type of exchanges and got rates that favored the members for a change.

stlphil: Thanks so much for a detailed report on the Beach Towers. The resort sounds so nice. I have heard that the food is expensive before, unfortunately. What time of year did you go? I realize the Beach Towers are the least expensive and oldest, but the points do seem pretty reasonable for an opportunity to see this beautiful resort. Thanks again for your help.

Dean: I remember when we were all guessing what points might be when Atlantis was suppposed to be added many months ago. I, too was very surprised that they were not near 100 points. We were supposed to go back to Disney in Feb. but with airfare being so high right now and my family throwing my Dad a big 80th birthday, I am considering cancelling Disney and banking the points in hope that airfare may adjust by summer time and we would have enough points to stay for a week at Atlantis instead. I guess we will all have to see what happens with airfare, though. You are also right Dean that it seems strange that we can not start booking this week, yet they will be taking reservations for Oct. I hope this does not fall through somehow. I guess we will have to wait and see.

Thanks everyone for your input! :flower:

i know when the exchange stuff came out last year it listed atlantis but gave no point info. i called member services at that time and was told that disney and atlantis were unable to come to a contractual agreement.

Disgirl-I will let you know about Atlantis next week. We leave on Sat. morning.
Not sure I should have read nono's comments but I will make my own judgement about the resort and report back!

Thanks so much allicat. I hope you have a great time. I know it is unfortunate that nono did not seem to enjoy the Atlantis, however, so many have had good experiences there. I know one family that has gone about 5 times and love it. Enjoy your stay and I can not wait to hear about it. Where are you staying while there?

DOOGIERUNNER I hope they start taking reservations soon. I think the member's website said the 27th. Is that what MS told you when you called?
It sounds like you have a wonderful trip planned. Wow 10 days at Disney and a week at Atlantis. That sounds really nice!! Let us know what happens and Good Luck with your plans. I need to decide about cancelling my Feb. trip and banking points by next week and then I will play around with dates for Atlantis. I wish I could go more in the winter but I have to work around school holidays and I think I will have to aim for the summer months. I hope this all pans out and we do not find out they were not able to work it out again with Atlantis. Good Luck to you!!

Patty :)

disgirl - what we liked better was the fact we could escape the excitement and kaos of Atlantis to Harborside which seems liked a different world!!! Harborside is on the Marina, so it was very peaceful and quiet! you don't have to race for chairs at the pool, and everyting is low key. But I loved the ability to go over to Atlantis, (short walk), have fun, then for some quiet time, head back to harborside!
