Atlantic City to close down?!?!

Not from New Jersey but my Mom went to Atlantic City Sunday and was planning to stay until Tuesday night. Last night when they went in some of the casinos some of the workers were very understandably upset and fearing the worst. They told them they would be closing Wed morning. I can't imagine them really letting that happen but who knows. :confused3

Hopefully it will all be over by then.

Keep checking

for details.

Thanks.

It would be horrible if all those people lose their jobs, even if it is for just a day or two, and all that money they will be losing...YIKES! Hopefully this is resolved soon, no one deserves to lose their jobs over this.

I'm in NJ but not in Atlantic city area.

The local news has reported that a shut down will be going through if an agreement can't be reached.

I live about 15 minutes from Atlantic City and my roommate works at one of the major casinos. From the news we've read around here and what she's heard, I believe it is definately going to happen. :confused3

So they aren't coming to any sort of agreement?

Well, the plan is for the law makers to work starting tomorrow morning until they reach a budget agreement. It should be interesting to see how long the shutdown goes. It has happened before but only lasted a day or two.

Well the Governor has technically declared non essential employees as furloughed.

The state inspectors whose job is to inspect the casinos would be furloughed.

Since there are no inspectors, the casinos can not be in operation.

Not to make light of this in any way, but there's going to be a lot of really p.o'd gamblers!

I didn't do it! It was Cantw8!!

In all seriousness, I cannot believe this. I feel horrible for all the people who will lose their jobs. It's awful.

A great decision by a great governor! The guy wants to raise taxes to close a budget shortfall and when this isn't supported by the legislature controlled by his own party, he's going to shut down a major tax/revenue generator. This will really get rid of the shortfall in record time. Why is it that our great politicians just can't seem to stop spending? Can any of you out there just keep spending once your paycheck is gone? The people who voted for this guy deserve him!

oy, the whole thing sounds like a mess.

when something like this happened in NY a few years ago, the state paid its emplyees in scrip, just so the government could stay in operation.

I do hope they resolve things.

A shut down occurred a few years ago. If I remember correctly, everything was shut down only for either one or two days.

NJ hasn't shut down before. And this is all about a one-penny increase to the sales tax, which doesn't apply to food or clothing anyway.

It's one thing when people make up stuff to make jokes about Jersey, does the state really need to create material for late-night monologues?

Bottom line is the state is broke. Those of us who live here are going to pay one way or another. I'd rather pay in sales tax than real estate tax. The sales tax hasn't been raised since it went into effect years ago. Reality of living in Jersey.. it's expensive.

My mom was a non essential civilian employee at Mc Guire AFB. I guess that would be a federal employee then? She was furloughed a few years ago--maybe 6 years ago for a few days... and then went back to work.
