I've constantly battled with 10-20 extra pounds over the years. Finally want to get serious and am reading up on Atkins. But are any foods strictly banned? I thought I read somewhere that caffeine is out. Or if not, what diet is that? Not sure about my morning coffee. Any thing else? It's just that now those 10-20 pounds are more like 20-25 pounds, and I snore a lot more than I did about 20 pounds ago. Help!

During Induction, no-nos include all fruit, high carb vegetables (potato, corn, peas, beans, etc.), all flour products (bread, pasta), rice and anything with sugar or fructose in them. (Read the book for a more comprehensive list.) What you can eat is most fish, chicken, beef, pork, salad greens, hard cheese and some other veggies. Once your body starts to adjust to this way of eating and aan extremely low carb level, you can go to the next level ("on going weight loss") and you start adding other foods that are low in carbs, slowly.

It is very easy to follow in the Induction strage - you basically eat salad (with full fat salad dressing) and meat. I found it to be very satisfying and easy to stick to.

As far as caffiene, it isn't recommended, but I drink lots of Diet Coke every day (my only sin right now!!!) and I have lost 82 pounds since last January, even after taking a month off due to surgery and three weeks off due to a wonderful lengthy vacation.

The main thing about Atkins I think is that is a life long eating plan - not a short term diet. I really like it, and despite taking "vacations" from the plan, I didn't really deviate real far (certainly did not eat like I did befor ethe diet) and getting back on track afterwards was easy and rewarding.

There are other benefits to Atkins, too, but this is already a long post, and I know many of our WISH colleagues will fill in more details. I hope you join us! Good luck!

Diary is a no-no except heavy cream, or half & half.

I dont quite understand how anyone can do atkins without reading the book, I've gotten the new diet revolution, and just today picked up the book that was written on the induction phase. The Atkins Essentials...

Read the books, that way you know for sure, and you understand WHY you cant eat certain foods.

The Carb Countdown dairy beverage(milk) is Atkins approved and is allowed on induction.I called a few weeks ago and talked to a human being that told me it was approved for phase 1!!!

I've got the book right here, Atkins Essentials here's some no-no's

Processed meats, such as ham, bacon, pepperoni, salami, hot dogs and other luncheon meats- and some fish=may be cured with sugar or contain fillers that contribute to carbs.

Oysters, and Mussels are higher in carbs than other shell-fish, so eat no more than 4 ounces per day.

Cottage Cheese, Farmer cheese, ricotta cheese, other fresh cheeses (not aged) reduced fat or low cal chesses, processed cheeses such as cheese spreads.

Balsamic Vinegar, Rice Vinegar made with added sugar, salad dressings made with added sugar or corn syrup

BBQ Sauce
Ketchup made with added sugar
Pickle Relish
Russian Dressing
Cranberry sauce
Coffee Substitues made from Grains
Alcoholic beverages
caffeinated cola drinks
fruit or vegetable juices

I'm not sure if it's a good idea to start eating carb-substitute prepackaged foods. I think it's setting yourself up to fail from the beginning...If you know when your going to start, begin to eliminate a few things early. DH and I have eliminated Caffine, Milk, and Sugar in our coffee's...small steps, but I'll be hooked on decaf by Thursday when we start.

Will make a trip to the library tomorrow to see what Atkins books I can get. The fact that Subway is going to be offering those wraps is especially promising since one of the problems I have is that DH and I eat out a lot. This whole thing sounds good!

Go to www.atkins.com and printout the carb counter and stick it in your purse. That way, when you're out, you can judge how many carbs a selection will have because you'll have your sheet that shows net carbs by category. I still carry mine, but I don't refer to it as often as I did a few months ago.

I also kept the Atkins book on my kitchen counter during induction, open to the page that told me what I could eat. I didn't deviate from what that page(s) said.

BTW, I didn't give up my one cup of coffee each morning, and I'm still seeing results... minus 30, here I come!
