My friend is doing the atkins and its going well for her. For 6 days a weeks she follows the induction religiously but once a week she has a sweet and sour chinese takeaway with a small portion of rice (about half a cup). She has done this from day one and has lost a steady 2 pounds a week with 6 in her first week. Would she have done better and how bad would the sweet and sour be in relation to carbs. Or is she just plain lucky.

She does seem to stay with induction for the 6 days a week even though she has been doing it for about 5 weeks now.
 
Just the sugar in the sweet and sour would knock me out of Ketosis. It is incredible that she has been able to loose weight consistently. Hey, if it works for her, then more power to her. I stick to it religiously for 7 days a week, and lost only .5 pounds this week.

Hope it continues for her :)
 
You know, when it comes down to it, whatever works...

The sweet and sour sauce is pretty close to pure sugar... you're looking at pretty close to 15 carbs per ounce (about a tablespoon). White rice is pretty much pure starch - it's about 45 carbs in a cup.

The biggest problem with eating like that isn't the weight loss, it's the blood sugar spikes she's probably getting out of the meal.

A diet like that is more of a Carbohydrate Addict's Diet than Atkins... they have a reward meal every day. Personally, I don't see how it works, but more power to the people that can do it.

Would she lose faster without the chinese food? Possibly. But, if she's happy, and she can stick to it without gorging, feeling deprived, binging... why change it? I wouldn't, however advise it for anyone else - it's probably part luck, part body chemistry. ;)
 
It really baffles me too. I tried atkins and it didn't go well so I'll try agin in a few weeks. She does do some cardio exercise every day but surely that would help kick start her ketosis again so quickly. Maybe shes just very jammy (lucky).
 

I would guess that every time your friend eats the sweet and sour and particularly the rice, she knocks herself out of ketosis. So she is sort of working against herself.

But if she's losing and she is happy with the amount she is losing then good for her! Everyone has to do this their own way. Sounds like she has been successful to me, good for her!
