Atkins day 1---help feel awful

I just wanted to thank all you nice people out there who are rooting for me on this Atkins diet.

Its a lovely encouragement knowing there are folks out there, even in other countries who are helping me along this rocky road.

I have always been a diet failure..........nothing ever works. I am more optimistic now than I have been for years and it's all thanks to you.
 
Hey there Lass! Glad to hear that you're hanging in there! Eating the Atkins' way is so against the way most of us have been taught to eat properly! Both of my sisters are nurses, and they have been doing Atkins too! Believe me, it's difficult to go against all the nutrition rules of yesterday. I can't believe it sometimes when I see my clothes getting baggy and the number on the scale keeps going down. I only know that this way of eating is the way for me!

Glad to hear you are feeling so much better. I agree that it sounds like your first day headache was caffeine withdrawl.

I decided I could not start a new diet and give up caffeine at the same time. I do limit myself to one DietRC in the morning, but plan to give it up eventually.

I have had no desire at all so far for chocolate or sweets / candy.This is from a chocoholic who would be in heaven in Cadburys......no desire at all. Why is that, does anyone know ??

I believe it is because you are keeping your blood sugar level stabilized. Most of the high glycemic foods that raise your blood sugar level so much are also high carb. When your blood sugar spikes, that triggers the urge to eat more and more carbs. On Atkins, you blood sugar level remains much more stable, thus reducing the cravings for sugar and starch.
 
Glad to hear everything is still going well!! I know you can do this because I can!!! About 20 years ago I did well on Weight Watchers (44 pounds)but as soon as I had my first piece of cake it was all over!! I gained it all back and through the years I doubled in gains over what I lost way back then. Since then I have tried other diets and have gone back to WW many many many times and FAILED each and every time. I had pretty much given up and decided that I would just have to be obese the rest of my life. I had been so depressed over the years I have even thought of suicide.I have never told any one that before!!! The only thing that kept me from doing it was the fact that I have a young daughter and I didn't want to leave her. Back in the spring I started secretly reading about some of the "other diets" around and finally decided to commit myself to two weeks of Atkins. I had always frowned on Atkins because of what the experts have always said but once even "they" started believing then that is why I tried this way. I am so glad I did!! I have had more success with this way of eating than anything I have ever done. I know that I can do this and believe me if I can you can too!!

Day 5

Feel fine !!!!!

Not really hungry today. I can't believe that I haven't had any sugar at all since Monday.......without too much effort,

I am simply not hungry.

I went to Safeway tonight to get a steak for dinner and Hannah asked me to bring her some sweets . So here I am in the confectionery aisle, looking for what she wanted.....and not in the least tempted.

I made a steak----I usually make a mess of cooking steak---but it was tasty and served with a small portion of stir-fry veg and mushrooms. Magic!(Not magic mushrooms, magic food )

So, is it working I wonder!! All my instincts say it can't possibly be. Fried food, cream, cheese, steak,mayo..........I don't have scales to weigh myself on so I don't know for sure if any weight has gone. I'll need to go to my mum's to weigh there. I'll wait until nearer the 2 weeks mark.

How long can I keep this up ................
 
YOU ARE DOING IT!!!!!!!! I think you will be surprised at the end of the two weeks!!! Also take your mearurements. That way if you can't get to a scale you can have another way to know that you are getting smaller. It is hard to believe that just a few days ago you felt awful isn't it???? It gets even easier!!

I think you can keep this up for however long you like!!!

We were just at a pool party where there were crisps, dips, crackers, burgers and buns, cake, etc. and my brother (who is on Atkins) was able to snack on pork rinds and burgers and bratwurst whilst we had the chips and other high carb items! You can do it!!!! As long as your mind is made up that there are certain food items you CHOOSE to eat and certain food items you CHOOSE NOT TO eat, then you can do it!!!!

Congrats on making if 5 days! Hopefully the next 5 will be even better for you!!!! :)
 
I am so glad I found you people...........I can't talk to anyone about this Atkins. My family would all be horrified and really worried if they knew I was on Atkins. There has been so much bad press here in the UK about it . I found out that 2 of the "expert panels" who recently released their "findings" on Atkins - and have half the UK thinking Atkins will kill you - are.........wait for it.....

Anyway I will continue as best I can with your support which is just fantastic. I'm becoming addicted to DIS boards now instead of carbs ..:D

My plan was to try Atkins and try to lose 20lbs before December when I go to Disney with my family. Then I was going to eat everything forbidden for 2 weeks including 3 days on the Disney Wonder , food unlimited. Now I don't feel the same urge to plurge...if you know what I mean.

Back to the present. Day 6 . ...going to have breakfast.

I'm selfish..... I just LOVE to watch people's progress through the clippies- even though it's seeming to take forever for me to progress.

Just start with the "MEMBER" clippie, and when you go to your Mum's for weigh in- you can come back and update it!!!

The third thread at the top of this page has instructions on how to add the graphic that shows that you're participating in WISH and once you see how much you've lost in your first "weigh-in", you can start listing the "pounds lost" - you guys use a different weights measurement - right? so you'd probably have to convert to pounds!
Keep up the good work! (I went to WDW and the 3-day cruise this summer - gained 6 lbs! but they came off quickly once I got back home and got back on track - I never really ate pasta & potatoes while there - but the desserts got me!)
 
Day 6

Still on track!!!! This is unbelievable girls , still no cravings!!!

There is one question I have.

I know this is a lifestyle change but I do live in the real world and say that there will be a time , most definately on my Disney Cruise that I succumb to temptation. I know I shouldn't be thinking this way but ....I know me!!!!

So if I do have naughty foods , will I be ill ? Don't want to be sick on holiday..

What do you think ???
 
Day 7

I can't believe I'm still coping with this.......

Feel great and spent hours today cleaning the house and disposing of loads of Hannahs toys (rubbish) that she never uses. She was at school. No fatigue at all!!

More bad press today about Atkins.

Headlines "Did Atkins kill this girl ??"

This is a case thats been in all the papers for days. A young girl age 17 died in class 3 years ago (USA) . Her mother is convinced that Atkins is to blame and tells this to everyone who will listen. Turns out that no-one can prove it but meanwhile the UK is in a panic and hospitals here have banned Atkins in all areas.

I'm sorry for the girls family but I am going to continue anyway. Whats going to be the headline next " Did Weightwatchers kill the woman ?? " Doubt it.
 
Glad you are still going strong. I am sure it must be hard dealing with all the bad press. Too bad that the UK has not caught up with the way of thinking in the U.S. I know it is hard but try not to pay attention to it.

As far as your cruise goes don't even think about it right now. You might surprise yourself and really not want any of the bad stuff.(Well.....it COULD be a possibility!!!LOL!!!)
