LOTS of low carbers on lowcarbfriends are on this plan. It was Atkins 'original' plan before all the processed frankenfoods were available to us. I am going to be following this plan strictly after Christmas. I ordered the book at my local barnes and noble. YES, it is still available. If you are interested in following this with me after the holidays -- I'd love to have YOU join in. I just wanted to give you a heads up so you have time to order the book.

The first week is 'induction' and is basically meat, eggs, up to 4oz hard cheese, up to 4 tsp cream and 2 [1 cup servings] of salad - oil and vinegar for dressing.

Meat:
Steaks, corned beef, Lamb chops, hamburgers bacon, Any kind of meat in any quantity (except for meat with fillers like hot dogs, meatballs, packaged cold cuts).

Fowl: Duckling, turkey, chicken, anything with wings.

Desserts: Gelatin with artificial sweeteners.

Condiments: salt, pepper, mustard, horseradish, vinegar, vanilla, artificial sweetener, any spice without sugar in it.

Drinks: Water, mineral water, Vichy, club soda, beef or chicken broth, bouillon, sugar-free soda, coffee (under six cups caffeinated), tea.

Fish: All kinds of fish, canned salmon, seafood, EXCEPT oysters, clams, mussels, scallops, and pickled fish.

Eggs: unlimited, any style.

Salads: Two salads a day, each less then one cupful, loosely packed, made only of leafy greens, celery, or cukes and radishes. Dressings with vinegar, oil, salt, dry spices, herbs, grated cheese, or anchovies.

Butter and Mayo: Butter, mayo, lard, oil, shortening, margarine (this was before transfats information, so be careful).

Juice: Juice of one lime or lemon.

Cheese: Four ounces of any hard, aged cheese per day. NO cream cheese or cheese spreads.

Heavy Cream: Four teaspoons a day of heavy cream. NO milk.

After the first week you can add back in 5-8 grams of carbs per week until you reach your maximum losing level. This is 5-8 full grams - NOT net grams [do not subtract fiber].

Is anyone interested in an Atkins 1972 WISH challenge for the beginning of the year?

Thanks, Jody. I remember this original version. I think my dh and I should start following this after we return from Texas. A kick start to our continuing weight loss.

Thanks for posting this for us.

OK, you're the only person besides my Mother in Law who I've heard use the term Frankenfoods! I thought she was the only one :p

Seriously, she lectures at schools and other groups about genetically altered foods, irradiated foods, etc. She is a retired teacher who now works for the EPA and that's her job.

I think the Atkins 1972 plan is great - I remember as a kid Mom was on it and lost a lot of post-baby weight after my sister was born. I think everyone who is low-carbing should try to stay away from those overly processed foods and those bars - I always stall if I eat a bar.

Good luck with the plan!
