So, my daughter is about to start middle school (6th grade). I was noticing her legs yesterday...she inherited her Daddy's hairiness (his nickname was bear in school). Luckily, the hair is blond.

She clearly is going to have to shave her legs regularly. I was raised by hippie parents who never shaved their legs and never taught me to shave mine. I didn't start shaving my legs regularly until I went to college so I have no idea what age the girls normally start. Shaving your legs sucks, so I don't want her to start too early, because once you begin you can never stop.

So, what age have you found that girls start shaving their legs? The LAST thing I want is for her to get teased in school. I'm worried enough about middle school and the mean girl stuff without her giving them ammo unknowingly.

(I'll throw a poll up, but I'd love comments too on how you taught your daughter....did you go straight to razors or do an electric first?)

I don't remember with 100% certainty but I want to say she was 10. She has dark hair that is very visible.

I think she had a little electric razor for a few months and then got a Gillette Venus hand held for in the shower. There wasn't much teaching to do. I suggested shaving cream (she doesn't like it) and told her not to press down hard, just let the razor glide--and to go all in vertical motions upward. It wasn't some big traumatic ordeal or anything.

My mom told me I was too young and I was mortified in 6th grade. I swore I would never do that to my daughter.

At age 11, when I started to "notice" the hair on DDs legs, I asked her if any of the girls at her school were shaving her legs and asked her if it's something she would like to begin.

She asked some questions like if it hurt and I answer her honestly--not unless you nick yourself. I did tell her that once you start, you kind of have to keep with it and that, when she's ready, to let me know and that I would show her.

She didn't really start until about two years later at 13. I would HIGHLY recommend the Schick Intuition razor which has a bar of protection shaving lotion around the razor. It really helps avoid nicks and cuts.

I'm fine with my girls shaving as soon as they feel they need to. My oldest started shaving at 12. My other daughters are 11 & 9 and have not chosen to start shaving yet.

I was 11. I think my mom would have waited until I was 12 or in 7th grade, but I had just started competing in gymnastics. She didn't want me to lose point for harry legs. ;)

I'm 18 and really can't remember when I started. Maybe I was 10? It was never a big deal, I never even talked to my mom about it. I saw a razor in the shower and went for it :rotfl: .

I just say let her start whenever she feels the desire to. Throw the offer out there that if she ever wants you to show her how one day, you will, and then I'd leave it at that.

I think my dd was around 10. She has blonde hair ,but she was getting self conscious and felt like a Bigfoot. So she has been doing it ever since.

Around 10 also. She uses a Venus and shaving cream and has had no troubles. I didn't really teach her... she just figured it out I guess.

Probably fifth grade. If they are starting to feel a complex about it, now's the time.

I started shaving at 12. I had blonde hair so it wasn't terribly noticeable but it annoyed me.

My sister started around 10-11 I believe. She was teased at school since she had darker hair. Sad, but that is the reality of it.

It is not a big deal just let it happen naturally when she is ready.

I started around 10, pretty sure all of my friends started around the same time. Around 10 I will probably tell DD she can start when ever she likes and go over the basics with her

I started shaving the night before I started middle school! We've never used electric razors in my house, and it hasn't been a problem for anyone.

She was like 9 or 10.
It wasn't excessive at all, but it was noticeable that she had hair on her legs(brown, so you could see it). I'm going to say 9, but I think it was just once before she turned 10. Before that her hair wasn't noticeable.

DD started around her 11th birthday. She has blonde hair, but her body hair is dark. And she is a hairy little girl. Even her back is hairy. If that hasn't lightened up or diminished by the time she hits puberty, I may let her do something about that too (like waxing or even electrolysis).

DD was 8yo when she said she wanted to shave her legs. Not a surprise to me--she takes after her Greek-American dad with her dark hair and olive skin. The hair on her legs was very noticeable and she was embarrassed. I bought her an Intuition razor, which was very easy to use and limits the nicks and cuts that you get with traditional razors. She & I went into the bathroom and set up on the side of the tub. I showed her how to lather up her leg and shave without cutting herself. She was thrilled!

When I was younger I had a lot of dark hair on my legs, too, but my mom was not receptive at all. When I needed to wear a bra, mom got some old yellow ugly "training bras" from a friend--I mean these things looked nasty! Being a girl was not something to celebrate in our household. I have done everything I can to help DD20 feel comfortable with being a woman, whether it's shaving her legs, buying a new bra, using tampons or buying birth control.

My DD is 8 and going into 3rd grade. She has very dark hair and is hairy. She has asked periodically this past school year about getting rid of her hairy legs before people notice and I have put it of. Since she wears a skirt/jumper everyday for school she/we will likely shave with an electric razor before the start of school this year. Additionally, I started using a small facial razor on her mustache and uni-brow this year since it became noticeable. No one has teased her but the hair is/was dark and shaving seems like such an easy fix to save on the possible teasing.

Just a suggestion: throw the idea out there of getting her eyebrows waxed as opposed to shaving (if you think she'd be more satisfied with it). Having to go get that done only once a month or so is preferable, to me, over stubble.
