AT&T U-verse

I've had Uverse since April and I love it. I had Comcast before and while Comcast's internet speed was faster, Uverse is fine for our needs and the picture is great. The "tape 4 shows at once" thing is a bit misleading, you can only tape four at once if you are taping a normal channel, if you are taping in HD then you can only do 2 shows at once.

What can you tell me about it? I've done a little research but my DSL keeps going down. I have 2 phone lines-1 basic, 1 with everything including long distance and caller ID, 6.0 DSL for $102/month with all the taxes and junk. Directv with 5 inputs to 3 tv's with 3 DVR's for $89/month-no movie channels.

So they told me I could get all of that plus movie channels installed (which would include moving one of the tv's to my dd's room which she has been begging to do) for $127.00/month. Plus can likely cancel my Neflix for $10/month

I can't seem to keep my DSL running long enough last 2 days to have time to look for reviews. Thanks

I've been a U-verse customer since their initial rollout in the St. Louis area in 2008.

Here's my package:

  • 2 connected TVs w/DVR
  • U200 package
  • HD Service
  • Unlimited landline phone service
  • "Middle of the road" high-speed internet
I pay roughly $145 per month -- that may be high to some people, but if I wanted to, I could pare-down the internet speed, switch the landline to a smaller call plan and drop the HD and probably pay less than $90 per month for the rest.

Keep in mind that unlike your present set-up, U-verse internet is not DSL -- it's comparable to what the CATV companies offer.

The only drawback is that since U-verse is IPTV (uses the power of the internet for your TV signal), you must have a converter box on each connected set (the first box is free -- additional boxes cost $7 per month). In other words, you can't have a comverter box on one TV and run coax cables all over the house...

I've been a previous customer of both Dish Network and the local incumbent CATV company (Charter Communications), and I can finally say I am happy with my service!

We looked into getting UVerse a few months ago and decided not to. DH is famous for rewinding live TV. (especially when watching sports). This is not possible with UVerse. The only way to do it is to record every program that you're watching. You can then rewind the recording.

You can MOST CERTAINLY rewind live TV with U-verse (as a fellow sports fan, I did it multiple times while watching baseball, last night). Sorry to tell you this, but you got some bogus information, there.

We decided to stick with Dish Network. They gave us a deal for 24 months to stay so we're happy.

Hope it works out better for you than it did for me -- I have this thing about having to speak to outsourced customer service reps, overseas.

Maybe it depends on where you're at. I called U Verse directly and they told me that they only way to do it is to record the show. My friend has tried it on each of his TVs and it's not possible. He also asked the guy when they had to reinstall everything after the lightening strike and was told that they don't have that capability yet.
:confused3

Just for the heck of it, I did a google search and came up with a Uverse message board. Someone was asking this exact question. Here is the response.

Currently, live TV can only be paused from the TV connected to the DVR. When the THDVR Phase 3 update occurs, the ability to pause live TV will be available on the the TV's connected to the non-DVR STB's. No ETA on the release date, but the speculation is that it will occur sometime this year.

I'm not a fan of call centers in other countries either. Every time I called Dish Network, I've been able to speak to someone here. The last call that I made I got a very kind rep. He gave me his direct phone number and extension. I don't have the paperwork in front of me but I think that he was from UT. We've been very happy with Dish for the last 5 years. For at least the next 2 years, our bill will be quite a bit lower than what UVerse was offering

You guys made me do some test research.....LOL. I also had complained about not being able to rewind and pause live TV. I'm not a big TV watcher. Only watch a bit in my bedroom at night. The main box is located in the media/playroom and only my dd watches it. Sure enough.

I can't do it on my TV, but she can on that one. Guess who is losing the main box? I say Mama pays; Mama gets the good stuff:lmao:

We've had our Uverse since it was initially offered in the St. Louis metro east a couple of years ago, and we really like it. We've had a problem with one dvr box, but they came out the next day and replaced it. Hard to complain about that. Our bill actually came out to be less than Charter, but we joined so early that our additional box fees were waived. They run promos on premium channels all of the time, so I jump on those a lot. You just have to be willing to call and cancel before the end of the promotion period. Never been hasseled about that. Also, sometimes I just log into their customer service chat and ask if they have any specials going, and they'll apply the latest promo. Never had any luck with Charter in that respect. You'd have to be on the verge of canceling to get any specials. The only issue I have had is with their referral program. It works sometimes, but not others. Don't spend that money until it is in hand! :)

I have U-Verse, but just the internet and Voice (VOIP) service, no TV. I've been using it for a year now and have been happy with it. I had to order it with the tv service (they wouldn't let me order it without it for some reason), but then just canceled it after a couple months.

I have the High Speed Max Plus (up to 18mbps) and 2 Voice phone lines. We pay $120/month. The Voice service is unlimited calling and voice mail and forwarding stuff like that. You can get messages online and program the system too. I work from home and my company uses it as our main phone line and voice mail system. The call quality is really good. The only issue has been the whole ATT system going down twice (the first time was the day after I had it installed...), but otherwise it's been great.

To clear things up...

Currently, you can only pause/rewind live TV on the main U-verse box (which for many is the living/family room) -- as a PP said, there is a software update in the works which will enable alll connected U-verse TVs to pause/rewind.

Since U-verse (collectively, across all markets) is only a couple of years old, I can't imagine certain markets/set-top boxes being able to do things others can not.

@alymae1010 - sure beats Charter, don't you agree?

I wouldn't make that assumption: Service providers do sometimes pilot features and functionality in small areas, before deploying it more broadly.

Folks should also keep in mind that nothing is long-standing in this business. As we speak, plans are being promulgated that would turn the entire industry on its head within five years. And that's before we think about how the market itself might change in that time.

Completely and totally agree! :thumbsup2

Missing my U-Verse service.

Just moved across town and it's not available in the new area. Going to have to go with satellite (after HOA approval...ugh.)

Resurrecting this old thread, as a reasonable place to discuss the current situation. U-Verse is no longer carrying Scripps channels (Food Network, HGTV, etc.)

Actually, someone else just posted a thread about this:

And this is probably too late to help but...

Federal law prohibits your HOA from banning satellite dishes.

While I don't have AT&T and U-Verse, I "like" HGTV on facebook, and they posted a big thing about being dropped by the provider. It was really interesting to see, and all the comments that follwed. I would be so mad...I love Holmes on Homes!

These days, it is par-for-the-course for the two sides in such disputes to engage in ridiculously self-serving chest-beating and general whining about "the other side". I wouldn't give any credence to anything either company puts out about the dispute or about the other company.

Thanks...well aware of FCC laws (ignored an anonymous letter in mailbox several years ago after I put an antenna on my roof :) )They don't ban them here but one has to seek approval re: the placement to minimize its appearance, if possible. No need to rankle HOA board members as a new resident :)

But...no matter. Decided against it and have been very happy to be cable/satellite free for over 4 months now!

AT&T UVerse to me is a great product and offers a lot more than Cox does. The product is awesome. The business part is soooo bad. The price changed right after we got ours. They got all of our stuff so mixed up. When I called and asked for corporate they told me they did not have a corporate office. I googled it and found the corporate office and it took someone from this office several weeks to fix the bill. We got a message on line that we could get a free movie on demand that all we had to do was order the movie and watch it. Well, we were charged for it! You try to call (because of my work I don't get a lot of day time phone time) it is impossible to get someone in the hours they are open. UVerse is seperate from all of the other products. However, I still stand by the product....We love it. Billing not so much.

I like U-verse for cable tv and the phone service is good too ( i love being able to go online to block certain phone numbers from ringing through to my phone, very good for telemarketers!) but the DSL internet speeds aren't very fast compairded to high speed cable service from Comcast. It's usable, but downloads and uploads take much longer than with Comcast internet. I personally don't care but DH is constantly complaining, but then he's very impatient. :)

I have Uverse and am very happy with it. I previously had Comcast and they kept raising my rates AND I had bad service at my house. My house has the cable split a few times and the high speed internet would drop out a LOT. Sometimes I wouldn't have it for a day. Comcast admitted that the house needed to be rewired, BUT they don't provide that service. So I went with Uverse and I now no longer have drop outs.

Price is about the same, but I now have DVR ability on 3 TVs vs 1 with Comcast so I get more for my money.

I'm thinking about switching from Time Warner Cable to AT&T U-verse when my contract ends in Feb 2011. I'll probably do away with my home phone & just get a TV & internet package. I'm hoping to get more channels & better reception at a competitive price.
