Asthma

No, but hereditary traits can make someone more likely to develop the disease. Asthma symptoms (restricted airways) can also be experienced by people without asthma. I have restricted airways sometimes but don't have asthma right now. My DD has asthma and has to take several medications to control it.

I developed asthma a few years ago after a nurse practioner gave me the wrong meds for something...

I developed adult onset asthma at the age of 33.

I was diagnosed with ashtma when I was 20. The doctor said I probably always had it, but it flared up because my ex-husband smoked non-stop and we had stray kitties.

Jim smokes now and I love my kitties. I use my inhaler daily.

Is there way to help prevent getting asthma?

Not really. The things you can control are not smoking and treating allergies. Treatments have changed dramatically in the last 10 years. More emphasis on preventing symptoms than treating the symptoms. My 8yo DD takes preventative drugs and has not had severe attack since she started on them. During a time when she wasn't on preventatives she got sick and was in the hospital for 2 days.

You can be born with it, but it doesn't have to be something you're born with....My son was born with it and so was I.

My DD developed bronchial and exercised induced asthma when she was 8. Whenever she gets a cold, it always turns to bronchitis and she has to use her inhaler 1/2 hour before activity.

Good question.

I was diagnosed with exercise induced asthma last September.. now I always take my inhaler before I run..

I was diagnosed with asthma when I was 31. I had complained of being short of breath for YEARS and was told by my (now former) primary care doctor that I was having panic attacks! I told him I was fairly certain you typically do not wake up in the middle of the night from a deep sleep with a panic attack, but....

Anyway, thanks to Advair, I am now almost symptom free! I can say that Red Tide contributes to my symptoms.

My son was diagnosed at 2 months. My girls did not get asthma until 4th or 5th grade.
My son has always been on preventative medicine until two months ago. He is now 9.
Once we removed all carpet from the house he only had one attack and that was over a year ago. We also have blinds instead of curtains and dust often.

I have asthma I have had it since I was 12, but you can grow out of it. I haven't had an attack for 2 yrs. My aunt grew out of it. Hopefully my little cousin will (he is 14), his is really bad and he is often in hospitle. One way to help is to build up your self up with exercise (not sure if I worded that right). I started out by doing a 5 min run. When I could do that with no problems I would go up by a minute. You find your limitations this way and prevents any attacks for a certain amount. I have got up to 20 mins. But then agin I am not a running sort of person, so Ithink that it quite good.
I am not saying this will work for everyone, but it may help your children, if they get upset because they cant do what all the other children do.
