Assignment of Borrowed Points

I have thrown in my two cents here and there, but this is my first real post. I apologize if I have missed the answer to this question elsewhere.

I have three reservations in my 2010 use year that each have a combination of current and borrowed points because we made a few changes along the way. I am not questioning how the points were assigned by MS at the time, but was wondering whether there is a way to change them now without rebooking.

On a prior thread, some people suggested that MS could reassign points among reservations for trips in the same use year if none of the trips have been taken. I was just told that I could not do that without rebooking the trips, which is not going to work because I can't chance it.

Does that seem correct? It might be that the situation is different because I am talking about borrowed points instead of banked points, but I thought I would check if anyone has been successful in reassigning borrowed points between reservations in the same use year after all the reservations have been made but before any of them had been used (still 2 months out from first reservation).

It depends on if you made reservations at the 11 month window at your home resort or the 7 month window at another resort. If you borrowed points to make a 7 month booking, those points have to stay in that use year. If, however, you only booked within that 7-11 month window at your home resort, it doesn't matter...Then you can ask that the points be reallocated.

The issue is if you booked at the 7 month/non-home resort time period and wanted to reallocate home resort points from a different home resort, you would be essentially bypassing the 7 month window.

That means cancelling something that you might not get back although MS could check and see if there is current availablity before they do so. That would increase the chance you could get it back.

Usually - reassigning points is done b/c you have cancelled something which leaves you points that can't be banked and you want to use those up. Or - reassigning might happen if they've used points from a resort that you didn't want them to.

As far as I can tell from your post I would have expected the answer to be it could not be done as you wish.

The way my reservations are set up now, the only reservation I could do this with (and not worry too much about getting shut out because of availability) does not have enough 2010 points for me to do it.

Your take is consistent with what MS said. I was just checking here because of a prior thread I had seen talking about a similar (but probably distinguishable) situation.

If you borrowed points to complete a reservation, then the only way to move those points to a different reservation is to free them up, which means cancelling.

Since those points are being used, they can't be traded into an eariler reservation.

I think what you have probably read about is people who booked more than one trip and then cancelled a trip that had borrowed points. They called up MS, once those points were free and asked that they replace current UY points for a trip they still had booked.

In your case, your points are not free. It would be great to have those borrowed points attached to the first reservation, but unless you cancel something and re-book, you can't achieve what you want.

I am not sure that I would do that unless you know for sure that whatever you cancel can be rebooked.
