Does anyone else watch General Hospital? If so, what do you think of the new doctor wanting to give Spinelli a diagnosis? My husband and I pegged him as an Asperger's guy almost immediately when he started appearing on the show.
Some background for those who don't watch: A character named Damian Spinelli has been on General Hospital for about a year and a half. The guy is quirky, to say the least. He is very awkward socially. He refers to people by nicknames that he makes up instead of using their names. He refers to himself in the third person and calls himself "The Jackal" because his speciality is lurking around the Internet and hacking into secret files. The mob element on the show hired him as a computer specialist because he's so good at finding information and making things happen via his laptop. In fact, he is rarely seen without his laptop and the Internet is his singular, intense interest. He's tried to pursue several girls on the show but to no avail. He can't bring himself to say how he feels about them. One girl was madly in love with him but he didn't realize it until after she was murdered. He's what you could call "socially dense!"
Last week, he came down with a virus and had to be hospitalized. A new doctor is treating him and observed his social interactions with his visitors. He had a talk with Spinelli and referred to his awkward social interactions and stong interest in one subject area. He said he could do some further testing and give him a diagnosis. Spinelli replied that he wasn't interested in being diagnosed. This is the first time since the character appeared that they even mentioned a diagnosis. I'm wondering if they wrote him to have Asperger's all along? Or did some people point out that the character fits the profile so they decided to write in a diagnosis?
I, personally, love this character. My almost 13 year old son has Asperger's so I recognized it right away on the show. I think it would be exciting if they come out with the diagnosis on the show so Asperger's will gain more exposure. This character is interesting, smart, likable and has a huge heart. It will be interesting to see how this storyline shakes out.
