ASMu vs. POP, should I really care?

Okay, briefly...my only trip to Disney was 20 years ago and no one else in my family has ever been. We have NO allegance to any hotel. We were originally book at the POP before free dining. After dining was announced, we could only get ASMu.

The reasons I originally chose POP were that we have two small kids and everything I read seemed to point to POP being best, ie. no bus sharing, spray pool, good food court.

Once we were switched to ASMu, I read lots of things on this board and felt good about the switch and sort of thought...well it is meant to be this way. I have not read anything bad about ASMu, yet everyone who has had to switch to that location seems to be unhappy. I have yet to figure out why.

Are there some good reasons why I should try calling back to switch back to POP if it becomes available or should I just be glad I got free dining, all the ADRs the way I want them and can relax until 9/22?

I've stayed at both, and all things being equal I'd chose PoP. Mainly for the transportation and the fact that it's a little newer. But we really did enjoy ASMu. It's a pretty resort and the theming is really cute. I'd totally stay there for free dining.

As for the transportation, I don't think that it's going to be that big of a deal - even with the free dining. Most of the school age kids are already in school. I honestly don't think you can go wrong.

Here is a list of differences between the two resorts.

Pop is newer.
Pop was built in 2003.
All Star Movies was built in 1999.
All Star Sports and Music were built in 1994.
-------------------------------------------------------------
All Star Music is undergoing a refurbishment of all of the rooms and is slated to be completed by June 2007.

The Calypso and Jazz buildings are completed and the last I heard they are working on the Broadway Buildings.

DH and I stayed in a refurbished room last September.
We really liked it.
They even have a privacy curtain by the vanity - closet area just like the mods!

Here is a website with photos of the newly refurbished rooms at All Star Music.

Look at the Jazz Inn section with new posted:

------------------------------------------------

All Star Sports is slated to be refurbished between June and November of 2007.

Pop has a lake. The All Stars do not have a lake.

When staying at the All Stars you use any of the All Stars pools.
The 3 All Stars are within easy walking distance of each other.

The gift shops are separate from the food court at the All Stars.
The gift shop and food court are combined at Pop.

Pop has 2,880 guest rooms. 4 floors in each building.
Each of the All Stars has 1,960 rooms. 3 floors in each building.

Both Pop and the All Star rooms are 260 square feet.

The beds at the All Stars are movable.

the beds at Pop at bolted to the floor.

The far bed at an All Star is closer to wall. And the near bed is not as close to the doorway as it is at Pop

The far bed at Pop is pulled away from the wall more. The near bed is closer to door.

For most people that would not make a difference but since I need an ECV
the bed being so near the door at Pop makes it more difficult for me to back my EVC in. :moped:

----------------------------------------------

The buses are wonderful.

Bus rides are quite short from the ALL Stars according to PassPorter.com

All Star Buses-CBR buses---POPbuses--PO buses--- Contemporary
MK 20 min---- 20 min-----25 min------10 min---20 min(mono)
Epcot 10 min-- 15 min-----20 min------10 min---15 min
MGM 10 min----12 min-----15 min------15 min---20min
AK 10 min------20min-------15 min----15 min---20 min
DTD 15 min----20 min------20 min-----15 min---35 min

It only takes 10 minutes to get to Epcot, MGM and AK from All Stars.
MK is 20 min away. That's the same amount of time it takes on the monorail from the Contemporary.

A WORD ABOUT BUS SHARING

To me Bus Sharing at the All Stars is really a non issue.

In the mornings during Park opening hours each All Star usually has a dedicated bus.
During mid day it is usually just our stop and maybe one more on the way to the parks. On the way back sometimes it is all 3 but often Sports and Music share and Movies has it's own bus back. Each of the All Stars usually has it's own dedicated bus back from the MK.
That is a big plus. It seems like the Music bus stop usually has the shortest of the three All Star bus lines.

I guess some people who stay at POP see all 3 All Star names on the return sign of our bus stop when they head to the POP bus stop and think All Stars also has 3 stops on the way to the park.
(Even when we stop at another AS resort to load up it has not taken more than 5 minutes and we are on our way!)

POOLS

The pools at The All Stars are very kid friendly.

When staying at the All Stars you can use any of the All Star pools. That means 3 main pools ,3 quiet pools and 3 kiddie pools to chose from.

The All Star Movie Fantasia pool has Mickey.

The Calypso pool at ASMU has Donald Duck.

And the Surfs up pool at All Star Sports has giant surf boards.

Here are a few pool photos.

Have fun at Disney wherever you choose to stay!:wizard:

i stayed at both, pop is just newer but they were both good you will have fun either way the dp is great and free is even better.

I prefer Music to POP by a mile, so maybe I'm a bit biased, but I find the food court at Music to be better than POP's and I always enjoy the ambience of Music about a million times more than that of POP's (much more peaceful).

Thank you so much for the replies! I think I am just going to go with the flow and keep things the way they are. From now until 9/22 I am just going to enjoy that everything is booked (except air), we have free dining, all ADRs done and what we want, period!

ASMu, here we come!

You're gonna have a great time -- I'm a little jealous! :)

you can visit the other resorts with your kids.

Music Icons are music - so unless the child is into music - these can be dull (my opinion)

Pop and Movies has something most kids can relate too. their parents can definitely relate to Pop.

Music was great. It is quieter (again kids seems like noise). and lots of adults.

amy c -

I am staying at Music for free dining, too. I actually picked it over POP. I stayed at POP last year and I thought it got really crowded. It was a nice resort, but I want something a little quieter and I am hoping that Music fits the bill. Plus - music is smaller, it will all be refurbished by June, and it looks like it has more mature foliage. I am also looking forward to visiting Movies and Sports. Yeah - I'm weird like that. I like seeing other resorts up close and I have never seen the all stars except in pictures. In fact, all stars and CSR are the only resorts I have only seen in pictures. :3dglasses

I look at it as an adventure and I have a really positive vibe about the place - thanks LInda!

I've stayed at both and had a great time both trips. I preferred the food court at Pop, but the transportation at ASMu was much better!

Big tacky icons are big tacky icons, so theme didn't really affect my opinion of either resort. I did, however, really appreciate the peacefulness of ASMu. Pop seemed pretty chaotic at all hours of the day.

WDW is fun no matter where you stay. Enjoy yourself!

Thanks again to everyone! Our girls are so excited and that's what it's all about! I could just cry seeing the look on their faces everytime we talk about the trip.

Hope everyone else is having good luck with their trip planning!

...The reasons I originally chose POP were that we have two small kids and everything I read seemed to point to POP being best, ie. no bus sharing, spray pool, good food court.

If you have a little extra time you might want to walk over to All Star Movies (about a 5 minute from the main pool at Music to the main pool at Movies).

Movies has a really cute themed pool for young children.

Hers are a couple of photos from allearsnet:

I think most of those who had to switch and were unhappy have most likely been to Pop before and really liked Pop.
But they never stayed at Music so they do not know what to expect.

Thanks again to everyone! Our girls are so excited and that's what it's all about! I could just cry seeing the look on their faces everytime we talk about the trip.

That is what it is all about! I am so happy for your family.
I hope you enjoy All Star Music as much as we do.
And most all...Have fun at Disney!:wizard:
