Asking Uber to make quick grocery stop?

Hi all-these forums have been most helpful! We are WDW vets and I have learned so much about Disneyland for upcoming first trip.

We are flying into SNA and taking Uber to Disneyland area (or Lyft). Has anyone ever asked the driver to make a 10 minute stop at a store? I was thinking I could leave the family outside with the car and run into grocery, or Walmart or Target (whatever is on way) to quickly grab some water, cokes, breakfast food, etc. Is this possible? Of course I would pay the driver for the stopped time-just not sure if possible?

I would not ask anyone to stop and wait for you while you shop.

Go to your hotel, drop your bags, leave your family there. Then, hail a car and head to the grocery store. End the ride. Do your shopping, then hail a new car once you're done. You should not have any trouble getting these rides.

Unlike a taxi, typically not done with the Uber model and does not make drivers happy.

Better bet is to either go get settled in then grab another Uber to the store, take your time shopping, then another Uber back to hotel. They are all over the Anaheim area.

Other option is drop everyone and bags at hotel then have the Uber driver continue your trip to the grocery store, grab another Uber back when done.

Thanks-I was fully intending to pay for the stopped time, certainly not trying to take advantage of a drivers time-just wondering if it was done. I will take a separate trip!

Alternatively, if you have Amazon Prime, you can use Prime Now to order same day and have your purchase delivered within a 2 hour timeframe. I did this twice last week and it was super easy and the delivery was free but automatically included a $5 tip for the driver.

Thanks I do have prime and will look at that! Thanks so much!

We do this all the time. We like to go on cruises and we like wine. You are allowed to bring one or two bottles onboard with you, but we don't want to fly with wine bottles. We always take an uber from hotel to ship and have the driver stop at a wine shop. DH handles it, so not sure what is added to the uber bill, but I can share that the drivers never seem in any way annoyed or put out by these brief stops.

As a Lyft driver, you can add multiple stops to a ride - HOWEVER - we are not paid to sit and wait more than 2 minutes for you. We are paid for the estimated time and mileage, we are NOT paid to sit and wait.. My best advice is that if you are going to take a while to shop, take one ride to the store, and one from the store to your destination.

If you're only going to be a couple minutes, PLEASE make it a 2 destination ride, so your driver is paid for time and mileage accordingly.

Maybe that's how DH has been working it out with the drivers. Our drivers always seem to be pleased with our arrangements, rather than displeased.
I wanted to share our experience of making a stop because I know that it CAN be worked out so that it's fair and comfortable for both driver and passenger. Some of the suggestions about waiting for new cars here and there just seem burdensome and unnecessary. Open communication with the driver probably goes a long way here -- as with most things in life.

Uber drivers in most regions at least used to get paid based on the distance traveled and the time the trip takes. That may not be the case anymore.

In any case, most drivers would be happy to make the same cash sitting in the parking lot vs hustling to the next ride. Bring cash. Tip for the ride to the store then offer an additional tip to drive you back to your place either by leaving the meter running or by driving you home off the meter.

To be honest though, we've never had to wait more than a couple minutes to get a fresh car after a short trip to the store.

Yes, we are paid time and mileage - but it's by estimated time, not the additional 5-10 minutes they may have to sit and wait. We also can get assigned new rides mid-ride with a pax based on estimated drop off time and location that we have to go to as soon as we drop off the first pax at their location. Should we not do that timely, we can get flagged and lose that ride. We have no "meter" like a cab. In my circle most drivers would rather take the sure guaranteed ride than hope a pax tips adequately for sitting with you.

Thank you all for the input, like I said above, I am not trying to cheat a driver of time waiting. I was fully intending to pay the same rate for a driver to wait as I would for them to be driving. I thought I would be doing them a favor as they would be paid to sit and wait vs time in traffic. I will work out with the driver and pay more than fairly or just take separate rides!

I always have the Lyft driver stop by the Wine Exchange on the way to DL. Since it is just off of the 55 it is really not out of the way. I always order the wines ahead of time so they are ready to pick up when I arrive.

We found the Uber wait would have been 30 min at sna. We took a cab. Very clean. Not much more. Maybe $10?

It just depends on whether there are cars around. I have flown into SNA multiple times and taken Uber each time, only once did we have to wait more than 10 min, and it certainly wasn't anywhere near 30min, usually we wait less than 5 min for our car to arrive.

Take an Uber from the airport to the store. Then get another Uber from the store to your hotel. Or ask the first driver, with extra cash in hand to stop. Like $10-$20 cash in hand.

I don’t know about Uber but I know that Lyft advertises that you can make multiple stops with them.

Sure, but to me a stop to pick up/drop someone off is WAY different than physically exiting the car to go shopping.

Depending on where the OP is staying, there might not be a need for a stop at a grocery store. The intersection of Harbor and Katella now has the 24/7 CVS and a Walgreens across from each other. We've been able to buy basic groceries at the CVS many times and just carry our things back to either the Sheraton or the CCI. (Don't forget to bring some bags or be ready to buy some bags at the register -- the extra shopping bags work for shopping throughout your stay and for packing dirty laundry at the end of your trip.) And Vons.com and Amazon Prime are options, too.
