Asking for a receipt to exchange a gift?

My dad bought each family a portable DVD player for the holidays. First of all, it is a GREAT gift!!!! However, we already have 2 and I really hate to keep the 3rd one around sitting in a box, unused. The other 2 were gifts last Christmas to each child so they are already used and open. I hate to ask for the receipt because I know he really puts a lot of time & effort into picking out his gifts for everyone and loves to watch everyone open up his presents. I know stores are really cracking down on no returns without receipt policy so is there a store I could bring this back to for an exchange/store credit? - I'm not looking for cash back but another gift for the family. OR, would you ask for the receipt and what would you say?

I know stores are really picky about giving cash back, but i'm sure if you exchanced them for something else at the store he bought it at they would give you store credit.
