DH and I are headed to Ashville, NC in 2 weeks for a quick weekend away. We only just planned it 2 days ago!!! We're staying on the grounds of the Biltmore, but we wanted to try restaurants in Ashville proper. I've looked as some restaurant menus, and they seem overly fussy. Don't get me wrong, I love a good meal, and I don't mind spending for it. I just have a problem with octopus on the menu at a restaurant in the mountains way inland from the ocean (and there were a number of restaurants with octopus on the menu....).

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

I’m also visiting for the first time next month, so these aren’t places I’ve experienced yet, but I’m excited about the Tastee Diner and Rhubarb.

Thanks! Tastee Diner looks okay, but Rhubarb's menu doesn't excite me.

What kind of food are you looking for and do you want it to be in Asheville?

I personally think you find better food outside of Asheville in Brevard, Hendersonville, and Cashiers.

Fair question for what kind of food. I guess I'm looking for local home cooking. It's North Carolina...is there a BBQ place that can't be missed? I'm Italian, and I cook that often, so I usually don't eat that out. Of course, if there's a "to die for" Italian restaurant, I'll eat there in a heartbeat.

I'm scrolling through the restaurants and menus, and it looks like there are tons of independent chef's with their take on cuisine. There must be a demand because there are so many of them. I personally don't care for beets, goat cheese (or most cheese, for that matter), or octopus. There just seem to be an inordinate number of restaurants with these very things on the menu.

I guess if someone asked me where I went for the weekend and I said Ashville, will they say, "You went all the way there and didn't eat at <insert name of restaurant here>???"

I'll check out the restaurants in Brevard, Hendersonville, and Cashiers. Thanks!

ETA: We generally stay away from national chains. We prefer local restaurants.

I looked on a map for Brevard, Hendersonville, and Cashiers. I think Cashiers is a bit far. Hendersonville is probably the best best, especially for a 3 night stay.

A plain and simple lunch that cannot be missed is the moose cafe at the farmers market.

As for BBQ I cannot give you a straight answer on that. As an overweight North Carolinian that loves his BBQ, there's so many good choices but I would say a good place to start is at Luella's or Moe's.

Now if you want to come down to Winston Salem, I will take you out to all the best BBQ your heart could desire.

Thank you all!!! Awesome suggestions here...this is exactly what I was looking for!

:thanks:

9 Mile (Caribbean Inspired)
White Duck Taco (for casual counter service)
Twisted Laurel (awesome J. C. burger)

Well, now you have to share your W-S recommendations with the rest of us too :)
Camel city BBQ is one of my favorites but I love Mr BBQ too. Sadly Hills is no longer open.

Take a quick trip up the road to King and get some Stratford BBQ and then run down to Lexington for some Speedy's and Stamey's, then head a little further south to Salisbury and grab some College BBQ and Hendrix BBQ, and then we would need to run out to Graham to grab some Hursey's and Smithfields.

We just got back this morning. We managed to take off before the Cross Strike outage and landed when the issues started kicking in. No problems leaving this morning...no line for security at all.

We ate mostly on-site. The only time we ventured off was for Luella's, and OMG, was it good!!! I got a pulled pork sandwich with the vinegar based sauce and DH got the brisket sandwich with the Pisgah sauce. The hush puppies were really good....I should have gotten extra of those and not the slaw.

Thank you Clifton Tesh!!! :worship:
