I noticed that a number of other Make-a-Wish families were posting their excitement here, so I though, "Why not?"
Almost a year and a half ago, our 6 year old son Ashe was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia). One thing that we find most intriguing was that, as most stories do, he story didn't fully start there.
You see, when he was 5, Ashe shared a room with his old brother, Gabriel, who was 12 at the time. Gabriel's best friend was Geo. A corgi/sheltie mix dog who is just perfect for him. How do we transition from Leukemia to a pet dog? Well, here's where we think the story really begins:
When bedtime came, Geo would typically jump into bed with Gabriel, but for about a month before Ashe's diagnosis we noticed that Geo would jump into bed with Ashe instead. We thought it quirky, but smiled about it. What we strongly believe now is that Geo knew something was wrong with our youngest and was loyally standing guard. Protecting him.
Well, starting 1/22/12, Ashe found a new home in Rady Children's Hospital, San Diego. We stayed there for 29 days, actually. When we left, he was in remission (A simple way of saying that all active cancer cells were gone, but that stopping chemotherapy would only allow dormant cells to mature and develop once again). Since that time, it's been hospital visits for routine chemo and checkups and now, we're in the maintenance phase which is 3 years of treatment that should end with a cancer free son.
During the past year and a half, we've been blessed with the fact that Ashe has only needed to stay in the hospital once for a problem after his initial discharge and that was for getting the flu. That landed us at Rady for a week.
After so much poking, chemo, nausea, restrictions, etc., the time came for him to choose a Make-a-Wish.
His choice?
A Disney Cruise.
I am looking so forward to seeing my son, who has been through so much already, treated like a prince and spoiled over the course of the cruise. Of course, his mother and I will be there as well as his brother and sister, but bottom line...he needs this, and we are so blessed that there are those in the world willing to help perfect strangers, especially a child.
