As I was scooting thru the lobby of the AKL...

I have not met one that did more than stammer, apologize, turn red and/or slink away.

I never met one who ever stammered or apologized. Have met many who turned red, slinked away, or looked through you like you weren't there. Kinda like the kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Some so-called grown-ups are just oversized misbehaving kids. :sad2:

I really don't know what to say. People can be so cruel, and it seems to be getting worse. I wish I could say I have a pat answer when something mean is said, but usually I'm so shocked or hurt I don't say anything. Thankfully, those kind of comments are few and far between.

SOmething tells me that everyone in the vicinity who heard that woman's remark should have (needed to have) heard the rest of the story, i.e. your reply.

Ergo I think you were not out of line to react the way you did.

Another approach is to come up with some corny remark, also loud enough for everyone to hear but it must be short.

"Hey, buy me a Mickey ice cream. I want to be the heaviest person on earth."

I am sorry that this happened to you but I am not surprised. It happens all the time. Unfotunately, we don't always remember all the nice people along the way that try to make our life a little better by opening the doors etc. We just get stuck by the morons who are just insensitive ****s. Chances are these kind of people are very prejudice and ignorant. They just assume someone who may be in a scooter and heavier is just fat. Not they could have a disability where drugs or their disease may cause them to be that way etc. They just ASSUME that those in scooters that are not skinny are just lazy. Just like all muslims are terroists, and all unemployed people are lazy and all people who speak with an accent are not Americans. Lets get with the program people. Disabled people come in all shapes, sizes, ages, colors and creeds.

It's acceptable for people to "hate on" fat people so they "justify" their ignorant, insensitive remarks towards someone in a scooter by thinking whatever thy want to be nasty. People think being fat means w/oa doubt, you're lazy and sit around eating. Um, I'm a living proof of that NOT being the case. I barley eat ANYTHING. I've had gastric bypass, but I work SO MANY HOURS while I'm not being mom, that exercise isn't something I can work in right now. Not an keep the roof over our head anyway. I walk everywhere but I STILL get nasty looks. It doesn't matter. If I were in a scooter, they'd think Iw as lazy and not walk at all. Then when i'm walking, I'm STILL lazy and not walking enough and I'm obviously eating chips by the bag. :(
I heard a gal on the radio this week who had used a scooter for a few weeks after she had foot surgery. She is rail thin but she said she got some NASTY looks from people. She said it made her stop and think, SHE used to give those nasty looks! Now, in that position, even for a few weeks where it was *sses and elbows and kids faces, that made her THINK. Albeit, for her, I'm sure it wasn't enough. the saying "walk a few miles in my shoes" couldn't be more needed.

I'm not really adding anything here, it just makes me sad how people just HAVE to judge others just for the sake of doing so. WHY.
