Article on "toxic" Disney fans

It does strike me as funny when someone has enough computer skills to find a forum site, create a profile and then start posting questions but seems to have no idea how to search the internet. In the time it took to create your profile, you could have just as easily gone to a particular airline website if you are tying to find out the answer to "does Delta fly to X?".

Or the type of person who acts like they are too busy to look things up for themselves and want us to be their personal on-line assistant !!!
Most people happen upon “themed” message boards because of a search. They’re not necessarily looking for boards on the subject more like the subject led them to the boards. I stumbled upon the DIS looking for digital scrapbook content. A couple of years ago I had an issue where the heat for the back part of my vehicle would only blow ice cold air. Guess where I found the answer buried on something like page three of my search? A thread on The DIS of all places. Anyway, I doubt the vast majority are joining *just* to ask about a flight. More like they’ve gotten comfortable enough to ask before they do a search. Some are broad info seekers whiles others can’t see past the place they’re already a part of.

this is happening right now since there is a lot of anger over paid fastpasses. There are posters ripping other posters apart for merely asking how to use Genie+ because they are angry about it even existing. However, this kind of stuff isn't restricted to Disney groups. Star Wars fan groups are worse haha

I’m about to become a toxic Disney fan in a few days if I continue to not get a cast member when I call WDW (the 407 planning number) :headache: . We are going in a few weeks (this trip was just given to me as a bday gift from DH for my 50th bday on the 17th) and I have questions (last trip was 2012). Every time I call it tells me the wait time is 45-60 minutes, which I will do, but then 15-20 minutes into holding a recording tells me that if I want to the survey press one or I can just hang up - what?:furious: (I don’t get to use that smilie very often - LOL, but it’s how I feel). This happened on about 8 attempts. It’s a good thing I deal with insurance companies as part of my job - it gives me more patience than others - LOL!

In all seriousness - it really is starting to tick me off.
Sorry - I just had to vent about this

Fandom can jsut be like that. I've certainly gotten into some..."spirited" discussions about comic books, but I never get personal about it. It's all about fictional characters and what they do. I may be critical, but never rude. Sometimes I am the one being positive about it and others are jumping down my throat. I haven't noticed a lot of that here on the DIS, but sometimes it happens. Mods are pretty heavy-handed here, so it probably tamps that down a bit. People can do Disney however they want - we all have our ways and there is no "wrong" way to enjoy the parks.

I think the mods here do a great job of keeping topics on track and relevant to the subject. I used to belong to two other non-Disney forums and gave up on them when they were overrun with rude/obnoxious/toxic people who acted like they alone were allowed to express an opinion regardless of the topic AND the site mods did nothing to prevent such behavior. We all choose to participate here, don't get paid to post things, so I am fine with letting the owners of whatever site make the rules on topics/discussions they consider appropriate. It really benefits no one if topics are permitted to spiral out of control. I am sure there are plenty of other online sites where people can argue/belittle/talk down to others, glad this site isn't one of those places.

Disney fans don't even rate on the toxicity scale. They went out in the first round. Beaten by Hamilton.

Elon Musk fanboys. Now THAT is a toxic bunch.

Want to have some fun. Just go tell em you're buying the first electric truck to market, a Rivian, and cancelled your reservation for a cybertruck. Then watch the fireworks go off. HAHA.

The only things I have seen are if someone dares to disagree with Disney. Someone can say any variation of the following:

$50.00 for a cup????!!!!!!!

Tickets are soooooo expensive

I really don't like the (fill in the blank) ride

OMG I ate at (fill in the blank) and it was AWFUL!!!!!

A CM was rude to me!

The magic is gone

and they will be met with tons of backlash like, "how dare you insult Disney" "then just don't go, more room for me in line" "what do you care if I want to spend $100 on a stuffed mickey?" "YOU were probably rude to the CM" etc.

It's very sad to me after reading some of these. But people feel that they can say anything and be rude just because they aren't talking directly to the other parties. It's easy to say nasty things when you are not face to face.

Wait, how can Star Wars fans not be on that list? Nobody hates Star Wars more than Star Wars fans?

I do agree that Elon fans are pretty bad. I mean, I like Elon and SpaceX, but they had to close the live comments on a NASA engine test because all of the SpaceX fanboys were being rude about it and trashing the thing completely.

Kubrick fansa re WAY more pretentions than Tim Burton fans. Woody Allen and Tarrantino made some headway though, so that's well deserved. Wes Anderson might be the worst though!

IMO the most toxic area of the Disboards is located here on the Community Board. There are posters that just can't stand other points of view that don't line up with their own and they can get very nasty at times. Too bad really, different ideas, thoughts and beliefs is what makes the world go round. I have seen some nasty posts in other areas of these boards but nothing like I have seen in this area.

I do believe as others have said that the reason for this is the anonymity offered to posters who post on sites like this which allows them to behave in a negative manner. Unfortunately I also think it sometimes flows over to real life behavior for some.

While there have certainly been moments where I've taken issue with the mods decisions, I think the DIS generally hits a good balance. But there are definitely some topics that will get you taken apart (politely and within the rules, though, not like on unmoderated boards or groups) on certain boards, or at least there were when I used to spend more time on the WDW-focused boards here. Expressing appreciation for the dining plan on the restaurant board, for example, or mentioning traveling despite credit card debt on the budget board. And there's always been a core of Disney apologists who will excuse any cuts/price increases or blame guests rather than the company for anything that isn't as good an experience as it once was. But the moderation generally keeps it from getting nasty or personal, and I do appreciate that. It is probably why I hung out here long enough to become a regular and stuck around even though our Disney phase (and particularly the need for advice/planning help) is in the rear view now.

And the worst I've ever experienced didn't even make the bracket, probably because the game is a shell of what it once was and all the die-hards have long since jumped ship. But the World of Warcraft fandom around the peak of the game's popularity was nothing short of vile. Then again, so was the in-game general chat...

Its actually not as bad as it was 5 to 10 years ago - there are far fewer people that will defend Disney no matter what - there are still some - but far fewer

It reminds me once someone said: If Disney decided to whack every 10th person who entered the park in the knee with a lead pipe, some people would blame YOU for being 10th in line. LOL! I never forgot that!
