ARTICLE: Children who are spanked have lower IQs

I dunt cee what evreeone iz talken abot. Eyem a very very inteli..intel..uh, smart persen. In fakt I Iz a collage gradiate, and I waz spancked. Obvios...Obivios... Clearly it didn't not hav eny efect on me.

If your kids are so smart, how come you have to spank them at all?

BTW, kudos for having all those IQs at the tips of your fingers. Is testing mandatory in your family?

Jane

We spanked when they were younger. Now they get grounded.

No, testing is not mandatory in our family, although I do like the idea. (just kidding ;)) All students in NC public schools are tested in 3rd grade to determine who is to be recommended for the academically gifted classes.

Another dissenter here. All five of us sibs were spanked. Actualy, we were physically and psychologically abused. And yet, four of us have IQ scores in the gifted catagory. My parents were high school graduates and used to beat the crap out of us. But my sibs and I took refuge in books. We all read voraciously. That's where I got my real education.

That was my dh and his siblings too. He and his brother sought refuge outside of the home (literally outside) and built some amazing things. MacGyver would have been proud! His parents were dirt poor and uneducated, but his dad is VERY smart and only went to school until 8th grade. Formal education or not, that is where they got their high IQ's.

. And 80% of statistics are made up anyway. See, I just did one right there. :)

:rotfl:

. (And there is a big difference between a rare spanking and a constant stream of swats for every little thing.)

ITA with this statement. I've swatted my DS on the butt and at this point he is doing great in school and is socially well adjusted...go figure:confused3

Wow! Snark much! I don't know where you live, but schools automatically test kids in the 3rd and 4th grade for the MG and AP classes!

Come to think of it, whenever I did get a smack as a kid it was always for being a smart mouth. Maybe that article is right! :confused3

You owe me a monitor..I just spit Diet coke all over mine:lmao:

HEY!!! Guess what? My DS12, who was spanked when younger, just walked in with his report card.

All A's :yay:......and he was only one of three kids who got an A in pre-algebra.

:woohoo:

My DD was tested over the summer for gifted(which she made) . Her IQ was 140 and she gets spanked on occasion.;)

I certainly had no problem swatting their behinds when they were little....but I personally recommend disabling the cell phone and taking car keys as more effective means! I really can't see the correlation between spanking and IQ.........being involved with your kids and caring about their education seems to go a lot further than swatting their butt for jumping outta the cart at Walmart!

I know it's not true in every case, but I would guess that parents who spank have less education than those that don't. I honestly don't know anyone here who spanks their children.

I don't know anyone that does that either!

I am surprised at how many kids are considered gifted.

LOL- I think they must have really low standards now to be considered "gifted" either that or every parent of a gifted child posts here :confused3

I find it sad that no one is happy with just having healthy average kids.

I personally dont know anyone that spanks their kids in this day in age either. My parents spanked me I turned out okay, but they also smoked in the house and I turned out alright - doesn't make it right...

I find it sad that no one is happy with just having healthy average kids.

I would be thrilled to have average kids. Mine, unfortunately, were/are academically challenged and have various learning disorders.

I don't see what would be wrong with being proud or happy if they were gifted. :confused3

I dont see anything wrong with that either - I just find it hard to believe there are SO many gifted kids...

I think the point that was being made throughout the thread was exhibiting disagreement with the study that was referenced in the original post. Individuals provided their own evidence that was directly contradictory to the findings of the study. Nobody said anything about not being satisfied with their children unless they were "gifted".

Quite frankly, "gifted" can mean many things. While I do have an IQ that is considered to be above average, I am NOT mechanically inclined (very below average in that area). Some people are gifted in that area (though standardized tests may not show that "giftedness"). Those who are just have a different kind of intelligence than I have. Not better, not worse, just different.

I find it sad the judgement towards the parents on here who simply were commenting how the spanking didn't seem to affect their intellegience which is what "genious" and "giftedness" are based on.

The assumption that everyone is out to prove their child to be a braniac is preposterous. As many said, it is part of regular testing of students in elementary school.

I really could care less what my kids are. I could care less what I was.

How one could make the leap that we can't be happy with average kids--is beyond me.

But maybe the spanking of my youth affected my brain to not be able to figure that out.

Heck--I'm the homeschooling parent who pretty much didn't begin "teaching" my child until first grade. She just enjoyed playing the first 6 years of her life. There's a big difference between finding out a child is "gifted" versus trying to turn them into an over achiever so that they will think they are special and smart.

I must admit, for a thread full of such high IQ's I'm a little surprised that no one is taking the time to look at the actual study, not the news blurb, and find out what it says before just dismissing it. Of course, the media always reports the actual findings and never sensationalizes things...

I'm also saddened by the number of people presenting personal cases for why the study must obviously and clearly be wrong. Anecdotal evidence does not count for much in science. The plural of anecdotes does not equal data. Yet very often people seem to think this is the case.

I'm not saying anyone is wrong. Perhaps you were spanked, or you have spanked you children and they are, indeed, gifted. Of course, the study didn't suggest a direct link, it looked at a trend in the data. I wonder how many people reacted so very strongly because they couldn't handle the idea that perhaps their actions weren't exemplary?

Pshaw! My actions ARE exemplary. I'm the one with the high IQ. My mom is the nutbag who smacked me around. :lmao:
