We tend to get there on an early flight on arrival day but do not head to the parks. With that being said we try to have dinner somewhere around Magic Kingdom. Last time we did Chef Mickey's. The time before that we did The Wave. We don't have any place that is a tradition but we try to be close so we can watch Wishes.
We always head to DS on arrival day as we never know what time we will get there and don't want to waste a day at the parks. We also use arrival night to try a different restaurant every year. Raglan, Rainforest, Pardisio and even Earl of Sandwhich have been some we have tried. This last trip, Mrs. Ally and I ended up trying Blaze Pizza because we were late and it was fast. Definitely a good budget restaurant in a pinch. Quick. Pizza was good.
We fly in from Australia (a 25 hour commute) so we don't make ADR's. We usually land at MCO by 5pm and once we have checked in and settled into the room, we head to DTD. Pin trading, a visit to World of Disney, take a few photos and trip to Starbucks and Earl of Sandwich. Then back to the resort to sleep and get ready to hit the parks at rope drop.
with the non-refundable $10 pp fee I book nothing for arrival day.
With flights, you never know. I had a 7am flight out, getting in at 10. Well that got cancelled and turned into a 6pm arrival time. you just never know. So factor in the unknown and you will be safer
I would love to dine out on arrival day but as we travel from England, by the time we check into our room, we've been on the road for almost 15 hours. Not only do I not have the energy, I am so tired I've lost my appetite. But boy is it back the next day!
We fly in from UK, so, no ADR, just in case of delays.
We take our time setting in to the resort, explore, get snacks or QS depending on how hungry, whether we feel like the food.
And, get ourselves adjusted with the time and everything.

I'd echo this and even when we drive, we try to build in some extra cushion for traffic. For example if we plan to arrive at noon we won't book an ADR until dinner time.
