Arrival day dinner?

We just booked our trip to WDW for January 2017. It will be my daughter's 5th birthday. We are driving our RV down from GA and staying at FW. Last year (for my son's 5th) we did Mickey's Backyard BBQ for our arrival night, and it was perfect - got us right into the Disney magic. But I'm thinking it probably won't be open in mid-January and also may be fun to do something different. Any suggestions for a fun dinner that is not in a park and will get the kids excited (especially my daughter)?

How about Whispering Canyon in Wilderness Lodge or Beaches & Cream at Beach Club if you want to make a jaunt over?

Oh, yeah, Beaches and Cream would be really fun for kids! No characters, but ICE CREAM! In fact, I have that place down for our arrival day dessert.

Anywhere fun to do dinner over there? Then get ice cream there and check out the boardwalk? Could be fun - my kids have never been over there.

You can actually get real food at B&C. It's a lighter meal, but that means more room for the fun desserts!

Is Whispering Canyon really fun? Never been but we'll be close.
It is fun, particularly for kids. The waiters almost do little skits while serving. Tell the kids to ask for ketchup & see what happens.

If she loves Minnie then Chef Mickey's would be a good choice. It's very 'Disney' and was always our first night dinner destination when my kids were younger.

Our arrival dinner in October is at Whispering Canyon. I did that because it was great during our last trip and it's just a quick (and fun) water ferry ride over to Wilderness Lodge. My son was turning 7 last time we went and really loved it (so did DH).

My other two kids have been to Chef Mickey's but one was a baby and my daughter wasn't born yet, so that would be exciting for them. Could be a good option. Maybe ride the monorail around too :). And we could take the ferry over.

1900 Park Fare or Chef Mickeys! Both are character buffets and are close to FW. I haven't been to Chef Mickey's in a few years, but 1900 Park Fare was really good when we went a few months ago

Hoop Dee Doo is a great show and it's indoors and runs year round. No characters though but a very fun time! you can find the show on youtube if you want to preview and see if it's something your kids would enjoy.

I always hear great things about it. Another good idea! We may do it even if not the first night, since we're staying there.

Another vote for HDDR! It's a must do every trip, the last five years :) definitely entertaining!

We did B&C as our arrival dinner a few weeks ago and my kids loved it. We then took the boat over the Boardwalk and walked around that area. They really liked seeing that area.

We'll be there around the same time as you and we're doing Whispering Canyon Cafe then hopping over to Fort Wilderness to do the campfire with Chip/Dale.
