Arrgh. I almost overdosed my son!

I think I just broke all the cardinal rules of medication administration...DS14 takes 3 meds for seizures every day. I sat down to fill his 7-day boxes and for some reason I also got my meds out. You know where this is going... Yep,that's right. I put MY meds in HIS boxes. Sleep med, mood stabilizer, antidepressant, aspirin, cholesteral med, allergy med.

Usually it's my job to give the meds around here(I'm a nurse, no less ) but tonight I was out. DH went to give the meds and felt like "something looks wrong." Thank God my husband has some common sense(because I have obviously lost my mind!) He just left the pills there, got out the original bottles and gave the right stuff.

I am so put out with myself. This could have been a VERY BAD mistake! Never NEVER draw meds on two people at the same time! Double check every medicine, every time! And if it doesn't look right, DON'T GIVE IT!

That's my PSA for the month.

I agree with this learn from it and move on...although I must admit it is hard to do. Minky-give your DH a big hug, and get a good night sleep.

Thanks for sharing - as someone who doesn't give out much meds - that is something I would never think about fixing meds for 2 people at once. Just shows us how easy it is for mistakes to happen. So glad your dh was observant -often the other person wouldn't have a clue what the meds should look like if they aren't the one typically giving them.

When my DH was a child he was on Ritalin. His mom was at work and he needed his medicine, so his Dad gave him what he thought was his medicine but turned out to be his Mom's Valium. When his Mom got home he was in a total stupor. It was a scare but my DH ended up being fine.

I agree with other poster's give your DH a big hug and be thankful he realized there was something not right.

At least your DH has common sense. My DH would have given him the meds I put in the box because they were there . It is a good thing our kids know what they have to take (which isn't much of anything-just allergy meds but still).

I didn't realize I was anyone's fan... I just know what's going on in my own world and I hate to see someone beating themselves up over something that could have been. If I've over-poster on certain users threads, it really is just coincidence as to what caught my eye to read. I would say the same thing no matter who had posted.

We all make a mistake here & there-no harm done. When my dad was dying-my daughter was 2 & sick-bought some Tylenol-noticed when we arrived home it was for ages 6 & up-anyway-she got up early climbed out the crib, over the gate, down the stairs, climbed up the shelves to get the UNOPENED bottle. She opened it & drank it all! Had a bruise & blister on her palm from working it open-child-proof too. She brought it to us & siad look mommy I drank it all up! & had a trip to hospital-all was fine then my son decided to get "M & M's" from my moms purse (her thyroid med) he only had a few but another call to poison control...ugh!

Minkydog -- it was a mistake. You learned from it and no harm was done. As parents, don't we make mistakes all the time????? Cut yourself a break!!! I'll go out on a limb and say I bet that won't ever happen again.

Gotta tell a funny story about my mom. Well, it's funny now.

Mom has dementia and a seizure disorder. We have a 10 mg valium rectal suppository with us at all times in case the seizures get very bad to slow them down until paramedics can get to her.

Well, my sister had dropped Mom off with my brother for a weekend visit. Mom happened to have a little yeast infection going on at the time. When she got to my brother's, she mentioned it modestly and my brother gets the medicine out of her suitcase and tells her to go ahead take it. So mom goes to the bathroom to take care of things. A little while later, my sister (her caregiver at the time) calls my brother and says, "hey, I just realized I forgot to pack mom's yeast infection medicine -- I'll bring it right over." My brother says, "No. It's here and mom just took a dose". My sister, looking at the yeast infection med in her hand, says, "No...I have it right here.".

Realizing at the same exact time what had happened, my brother runs to my mom's room to find her smiling and a little "loopy". Turns out, she gave herself the valium suppository and administered it incorrectly (it's a rectal suppository) and some of it was apparently absorbed into her blood stream making her feel verrryyyyy relaxed without a care in the world. My brother calls his wife who's a nurse and asks if he needs to call the ambulance. She reassures him that Mom will be fine, but suggests he stay with her until the valium wore off.

Needless to say, that never happened again. Thankfully she was fine. And so is your son. So -- moral of the story, time to let it go (although, I must admit, we do rib my brother about it every now and then ).
