I'm trying to type some good hints for my short Halloween quest and I am getting more and more frustrated with the dictionary.

WHY can't we type "the" more than three times?

or "in"?

Can't use more than three commas?

Can't type the word "WORD"??????

If it's any help, I don't think you can type any word or punctuation more than three times. :( That has always been my understanding.

I understand your frustration. <---( Not sure if I spelt that right  -- EDIT by A Days...now it's right...hehehe )
I always try and type in something for my room description and when ever I press "Okay" it says, "I'm sorry but this is unacceptable...." something like that. I never understood why too. Sometimes VMK can get out of hand!

P.S., Sorry for all the grammar mistakes tonight.

I don't know if this is the case or not, but I've heard that the reason they don't let you use more than three of any punctuation is so people couldn't use punctuation marks to count with. For example, typing "....." to represent the number 5. Of course, everyone knows how to dictionary dance around numbers anyway, but still...

yes, and it will tell me my hint is unacceptable, but it doesn't show me what the problem, nothing blinking red, so I'm left to guess what silly rule I'm breaking.

I've noticed sometimes that VMK highlights the word/punctuation mark in red while the "unacceptable" window is still open. Occassionally, you won't find any marked mistakes after closing it, so pay careful attention prior to doing this. Hope that helps! :goodvibes

If it's any help Llama, whenever I need to use a word more than three times I simply just capitalize the first letter of the word. For example if I use "the" twice, if I need to use it again I simply do "The" and it will let me type the word again.

About the word "word", it is my understanding that you can use it, heck, even recently the added "words" to the dictionary. I find that when I make a lot of dictionary no-no's it tends to highlight words that are acceptable. If that's the case, I just start it over. Though I know that's going to be a huge pain with writing for a quest. Good luck! :)

Hey girl friend, PirateDaisy is right about using capitals for the third or fourth time you need to use a word. But I think I can help you with the times you are not seeing the error flash in red. I found out the hard way myself.

Although we were taught proper writing was to leave two spaces after a sentence, you cannot do that any longer in VMK. Try looking at where you ended a sentence and started a new one. Bet you used "proper grammatical" two spaces! This also applies to anywhere you use written language on VMK now.

I try sometimes to "provide a little space" if I am trying to point something out. IE: "she said back to me.......This won't be good". Now, you are forced to do it as "she said back to me This won't be good".

Not sure why they won't let us use more than literally one space between any two letters/characters, but that is the reason for many of my "error messages" when I type in VMK now, when nothing is highlighted in red.

When writing a quest clue, I have found that it works best to open a new mail message. Type my clue there. It seems that the errors are easier to find and easier to correct. Then I do a print screen, go into quest kiosk and type what I already know is "vmk cool."

I understand your frustration.

Creative writing is definitely a skill in quest creating.

I thank my lucky stars I just read this thread!! I think I have spent more time looking at the screen (bringing my face right up close) and trying to find a flashing red light somewhere, anywhere! I would go through every word trying to see if it was repeated more than two times or what not...

...never would I have guessed it was a space thing because I always found myself using a double space before (when words could not continue on a line in, say, your signature or room description).

Now, I just feel silly I had not thought of that before! Isn't it just funny when you can sometimes figure out the most complicated problem, but then struggle over the easiest darned thing in the world? Heh, ah well...

Interestingly enough, we were taught to leave two spaces between sentences because we were typing with letters that were all the same width (think how wide an "m" is compared to an "i", on old typewriters and some old typeset, they were made the same width.) Now that we use fonts where each letter is a different width, it is no longer necessary. :)

^^^^ I have to completely agree with Duck & Dash on this topic. Those darned spacing rules must have just recently changed. It was driving me crazy trying to fix my quest. :badpc: Thanks for the lesson!

Many thanks Daisy and Duck!

I didn't know about the caps counting differently or about the extra space counting as an error. No wonder there was nothing in red!

As an English teacher, I find myself sinking lower and lower in this game to attempt to communicate. Eeesh.

you can say "the the The The"...so it recognizes case differences. Try that, or talking like caveman without use of word "the".

ROFL!! Me like caveman talk. ;)

I noticed the spaces thing recently, too. It was keeping me from sending
messages or editting room info until I figured out to take away double spaces!

I knew that "the the The The" was the only way around double word
censors for a while. It really improved the singing in VMK. ;)

Yes, I'm a dictionary dancer when it comes to singing in VMK. Why can't
we sing the Adventurers Club all-purpose theme song? :(

I had read the first post on this thread and couldnt figure out the problem.. Until just now!!

I Had a room descrption that I deleted part of so I thought it should work... DIDNT...Like you, nothing in red.... then I discovered the double space glitch and came running here to offer it up as a posible answer and TADA!!!! Seems others knew about it too!!

Hope that fixes your issues!! It fixed mine!
