Are you OVERweight? PETA has a message for you.

As a vegetarian myself I do not eat these types of foods regularly. I do not feel the need to constantly replace former meat items with fake items. Most vegetarians I know feel the same way. The same argument could be made for chemically enhanced foods that contain meat/animal products.

I wish that a vegetarian diet would make me thin though but alas it does not. Then again, neither did eating meat. Too bad the PETA people are bashing vegetarians themselves if they are not skinny.

I'm not a vegetarian, but I do enjoy veggie burgers...I actually bought some delicious portabella mushroom burgers yesterday. :)

(Bolding above is mine) I didn't think of it that way but you are very right. That is sad... :(

My DSD decided to be a vegetarian for awhile. Her idea of a balanced meal was going to McDonald's and ordering super-sized fries and jumbo vanilla shake. And she wondered why she wasn't losing weight.

That sounds like a friend of mine from college.

Most of my friends in college were either veggie or vegan and every single one was morbidly obsese. In our dorm the meat eaters were the skinniest. Actually, a vegetarian diet can be worse ofr you because many peopel (not all) replace meat with high carb dishes.

My son has severe food allergies which mean that we have to shop like vegans (he's allergic to almost all meats...he can only eat pork and fish...and he is allergic to eggs, milk, peanuts and tree nuts) Getting protein into a five year old without being able to use dairy, meat or nuts is so hard he's on supplimental ammino acid formula that keeps him from having to be fed through a tube in his stomach. It is unbelievable to me that anyone would choose this lifestyle voluntarily. He's already dropping weight rapidly since loosing his food.

I am sorry to hear about your son. My DS is allergic to eggs, dairy, soy, tree nuts, ground nuts, fish, shellfish and kiwi. I feel your pain. My son also had a feeding tube for short time when he was younger. At that time he was allergic to 28 different things.

We chose a vegan diet and it has been the best thing ever for him. It took years of experimenting to find what would work for him. He still breaks out in hives regularly but he does not vomit anymore. He isn't losing weight but he will always be a skinny boy. It seems to be just the way he is.

Good luck to you.

Thank you. I'm sure we'll adapt too, but we're not there yet. I'm glad that your son feels better too. My husband and I are also mirroring my son's diet and it's HARD.

I think PETA would be better served to mind their own business and leave other people alone.

PETA is a PITA.

that's funny!

I feel for you, it must be a challenge. I have a DD with a mild peanut allergy and it can be a challenge sometimes, having that many allergies, man, it sounds like you're one heck of a mom keeping him well.

Ok, my unscientific take on the whole thing-if I eat meat, I have energy and I feel good, strong. If I end up eating a pasta dinner or doing a few no-meat days in a row, I tend to feel weak, tired, and not want to go exercise. The kids get cranky, my DH starts eating cake. One thick grilled ribeye and the whole family is happy and going out for walks...

I am so sorry to hear about that. My mom (though no where near as dramatic) is a celiac so no wheat, gluten, etc. for her so I know about at least somewhat of a restrictive diet and it is no fun. If you live some place that has a Wegman's grocery store near by, they have a great selection of food for people with food allergies.

It's really tough now, but it will get better. Here is another hug for you!

We have 3 vegan friends and 2 vegetarian friends. They are all thin and in great shape. We cut meat way back after reading The China Study and several other books/studies. We also try to stay away from bad carbs. I think it would be very easy to be a vegetarian/vegan if there were more great vegetarian/vegan restaurants around. We have been to several with our friends and the food is fantastic! They all eat a great variety of foods even the vegans. They all love to cook and the food is fantastic.

honestly I have a message for PETA/PITA as well, I just can't write it on this board without getting points.
