Are you expecting a bonus?

No end-of-year bonus when you work for the Federal government. I used to get a $400 "holiday" bonus when I worked for a government contractor.

As a governement worker, I can get a cash bonus during various times of year if I do something phenomenal.

Yeah as a State Employee the public would love if I got a bonus:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Yep - no raise either. But I do get a nice big paycheck due to the forced overtime.

Mine comes early next year, usually March and is based on the company's performance the year before. It can range any where between 1-8% of my salary. As of the 3rd quarter I'm hoping for ~5%

My end of the year bonus is a fruit basket. LOL

I'm not kidding. That's what it is. Oh well, I like fruit.:)

Do you think you are entitled to bonuses or something a company gives in recognition of good work? In other words, the company has a really good year a bonus is given or a company doesn't do so good and a bonus is not given. My company never gave a bonus. Someone I know works for one that does and goals are defined for the year and if exceeded bonuses are given.

My bonus is a part of my compensation package. The amount depends on the company profits.

Same for me. Executives receive them in January and they are based on the profits for the year ending 10/31.

Public school teacher here...no bonuses.

No raises either, but that's another thread. :teacher:

State Gov employees, so no bonus. No raises for years either but that's another thread.

As they say "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence".

We lost 8 (out of our 90) employees to state jobs this year. No question, state workers have been hit hard here. Furloughs. No pay raises, and cuts in medical benefits. But their compensation after all that is still about 25% more than what the private sector pays. Oh, did I mention we lost 8 employees to state jobs, even though the state has had a hiring freeze in place since January 1, 2009. How does THAT happen? In the private sector, hiring freeze means you don't hire anyone.

And to the original question, no, bonuses went about 25 years ago when we got a 401k plan, money goes there now.

DH's comes in November and we were happy to get one this year after two years of no bonus due to the economy.

It wasn't as large as it has been many years ago, but since this was something rather than nothing, we were happy.

Unfortunately, we had to use it to work on our cars. They needed regular maintenance and such, but we are happy to have cash to pay for it.

I was offered a job with the State when I graduated college. I ended up not taking it, but did ask about the freeze on raises when I was discussing salary. The government uses wayyyyy more titles than the private sector does. So, they said it was standard to get promoted from Auditor I to Auditor II, then Auditor III, then Senior Auditor I, etc. So, if you're getting a "promotion" every 1-2 years, you're still getting a raise. They just don't call it that.

Each year I get a $10 gift card to the local grocery store. Lets see .... that means my year end bonus is an extra 17 minutes of pay. wooohooo.

Either a holiday or year end bonus?

Did you used to get and now don't?
Ever get one?

A year end / holiday bonus????

:rotfl2::rotfl::rotfl2::rotfl::rotfl2::rotfl:

I work for a fortune 500 company and have never ever had had one of those...

Another Fed-neck here, so no bonuses, we can get nominated for cash rewards though but they vary on how much your supervisors like you.

I received an unexpected and extremely generous gift from my employer two weeks ago. I'm sure it's considered my Christmas bonus, too!:goodvibes:cool1:

Husband receives a bonus based on personal and company performance; it is considered to be a part of his compensation. It is paid in March based on the previous years performance--he usually knows the number early to mid February.

His bonus is always more than I make a year, but his company is notorious for paying below market rate (however they more than make up for that with bonus).

If there was a year he did not get a bonus, he would find another job. His skills are highly in demand, and he gets offers frequently. He could get a higher base pay, but with bonus, and profit sharing you will never hear him complain.

The first year he worked there, I knew he got a bonus (but thought it was similar to the bonus his previous employer paid $1500-$2000) and thought a "bank error had occurred in our favor" the day the direct deposit hit our account. He had not told me the amount in advance, thinking it would be a happy surprise.

When I still had a job (laid off in April) I would get a quarterly bonus. One quarter, company was having problems (hence the closed office and 300 people laid off) and my bonus was $4.17. We were all laughing, it wasn't even enough to get a fast food lunch.

Sadly they all hit at the same time, with his regular check, so we get hit hard in taxes.
Technically it shouldn't matter when the bonus comes out, the IRS requires employeers to deduct 25% federal taxes. States will have their own rules.

Here state employees get way less than market value for salary, but we feel the work is important.

I used to get one regularly when I was in radio, not since I got into television. Don't expect one this year, either. Last year my boss gave us homemade bath salts and cds her husband's band made.. :rolleyes1

I gave my employees gift cards and she railed me about it THIS year. Made HER look bad... uh, NO. She made herself look bad.

The company is trying to stay afloat in this economy so I totally get it. I'm just glad to be getting a paycheck and not severance pay...:thumbsup2

I love bonus time!
Last years was enough to pay the mortgage for six months.

Husband gets profitsharing, but he cannot touch it until he retires or leaves.

I wish. We're lucky we don't have to pay for our own toilet paper. -Yes, they are talking about that. Unfortunately I am just another employee code rather than a name or face. Pretty sad considering I work in patient care.

I used to work for a smaller accounting firm doing corporate tax returns. The partners of the firm received the bulk of their fees on our work in the October/November time frame since corporate tax returns were due by September 15th. It was made very clear that we would receive a lump sum payment/bonus for our hard work at the end of the year. We were basically underpaid all year and then got a big lump sum payment since the majority of the money came in the last quarter. I got REALLY peeved when the senior partner came around two days before Christmas wearing a Santa hat handing out the checks saying "here is your Christmas bonus." Frankly, it isn't a bonus, I EARNED that money. I ditched that company the following year.
