I just had to share that I thought I could sniff out anything, but I had no idea my husband and friends were concocting a surprise party for me yesterday!!
This has been truly one of my favorite birthdays ever. My husband had already planned to take me to Mortons last night for dinner (he had a $100 Amex rewards gift certificate - which by the way doesn't get too much at Mortons) and we were thinking of doing a movie after. My mother in law was going to pick up the children about an hour after we left for the evening. My oldest is 12, but we didn't want them home alone late at night. So she calls around 3 to tell me that she's running errands and will be by at 6, but if we didn't mind feeding the children since she will be out and about. No problem.
We leave at 5:30 for an early reservation and I remember I was supposed to help with Youth dinner at my church tonight but wasn't sure what I needed to do, so I call my friend, Trish, who is also helping. She tells me Happy Birthday and asks if we're doing anything special. I tell her that we're on our way to dinner and might do a movie after. "Oh, Mortons - that's expensive. Good for you" she tells me. She says to stop by before going to the movie because she has something for me. OK - I tell her we're not even sure about the movie, but we'll stop by.
So we enjoy this absolutely magnificent dinner at Mortons. By the way - I've done Ruths Chris and now Morton's - Morton's wins!! Best steak I've ever had in my life. Impeccable service and awesome waiter who was engaging, but not intrusive. Anyway, I digress. Back to the great dinner. My husband even let me order the souffle for dessert (knowing he has this huge cake waiting).
We leave dinner very satisfied. I almost insisted we stick around downtown and stroll around the Riverwalk because it was such a pleasant evening. I would have loved to see him get out of that one.
We head back towards home and I remind my husband that we need to stop by my friends house. I told him that Trish always does movie passes for birthday gifts and she probably is insistant that we stop by before heading out to the movie so we can use the passes.
We stop by her house and I ring the doorbell. I swear in my head I was thinking to myself that I was going to tell her when she answered "OK - where's my surprise party". After I ring the bell, the door slowly opens and no one is there - I walk in. Of course - there's all my kids and my best friends in whole world yelling "SURPRISE!!!"
I can't believe I didn't get a whiff of any of this. Not even my kids spilled it. The biggest surprise was how cool my husband played this. This is the man who cannot wait for Christmas to give me my present.
I am a truly blessed person and last night showed me just how!
So, I want to hear other stories of ultimate surprises that caught you off guard.

I knew they were planning it because they said they would clean the house and that I didn't have to cook that day either. That never happens.
