Are You Allowed to Drive a Car With No Shoes

I think you are allowed to, not against the law, but I would think it not as safe, nor as comfortable, as with shoes.

Its against the law here in D.C. A good friend of mine got a ticket for it once. The officer pulled her over for speeding, noticed she was in her bare feet, and gave her two tickets - one for speeding, one for reckless driving.

Against the law here in NJ too.I got a ticket for doing it back when I was 17 coming home from the shore one weekend.

My parents always told me not to do it that it was illegal
I really don't know if it illegal or not in PA
but I love to drive with out my shoes in the summer

It's illegal in Texas, where I took driver's ed and got my first license. Considering foot and leg injuries are very common in wrecks, it's probably not a good idea.

Thanks for that link Dan. I've done it while moving my car in my driveway but that's it. It just isn't comfortable at all to me :)

I had always heard it the way Dan's link explains it. It may not be illegal per se to drive barefoot but there are other ways they can charge you, particularly if you get in an accident

That's some language in that link! ;)

But I beg to differ with the Urban Legends people - I distinctly remember a question about driving barefoot being on my NJ driver's license test (1998). Perhaps they've changed it since 1994, which is the date of all those "supposed" letters.

Well I was issued a ticket on the Garden state parkway for driving without shoes on.I was pulled over for speeding but he cut me a break and gave me the ticket for no shoes. This happened in the summer of 87'

I don't know. I tried to look it up the PA Driver's Manual when my youngest DSD was getting her license because she told me someone told her it was illegal, but I couldn't find any information about it.

I don't get it. I often take off my shoes while driving when I'm wearing clogs, because I can't tell where my foot is in relation to the pedals (same with high heels), and my foot will sometimes slip out of the shoes when i try to move. I feel really unsafe driving in some shoes.

P.S. I don't think I can take seriously anything written by the person in Dan's link. What an unpleasant guy.

I agree with Jen. When I'm wearing my chunky heal clogs it's really hard to drive in them. They slip off really easily, and because they have a chunky heal you don't get as much control over the pedals, and can be awkward switching from gas to brake. In this circumstance it would be safer to drive in just socks or barefeet than with them on. I don't see how driving barefoot would really be any different safety wise than say in flip-flops or something equally unprotective.

I always thought it was against the law in Illinois. Even if it isn't, I never drive with my shoes off. Feels too wierd.

I think the idea is to wear "safe" shoes, obviously really high heels or clogs would be just as dangerous, or more dangerous than driving barefoot!
I found this link, where they did a study on this issue
Driving Barefoot

If I have on flipflops when Im driving I usually slip it off. It seems safer to me to not wear them because they could get caught on something. I believe that you can get in trouble for it here, but Im not positive! Guess I better remember to wear tennis shoes when I go to get my lisence!
