Are you a designated driver?

I have been, but even when I do drink it is only one drink, or when we go wine tasting, 2 wineries with a meal in between them.

Designated driving is much more common now, and some establishments offer non-alcoholic drinks to the Dd in a group. That wasn't always the case. I was on a college trip in 1977 to Hawaii, and the group leader let us use the rental cars if the driver didn't drink. Cocktails were $3, the non-alcoholic drinks, soda and milk were $6. The designated drivers about broke us. As we were all under 21, and from California where that was the minimum drinking age, the then 18 year old drinking age in Hawaii was a treat.

I use to be once in awhile years ago. Now I don't tend to go out drinking much at all. Guess I'm getting old!

My friends and I tend to go for supper or coffee or out for a walk or a movie. I'ts rare that I go out drinking anymore.
At supper it would be one drink each maybe at the most two over a few hours so no DD needed.

I usually am. I have a medical condition where drinking would end up with me in lots of pain. Plus a medication that doesn't react well with alcohol.

In the old days within the group of us we would rotate who was the DD. Since I am the same way being on medication that won't allow me to drink. I don't mind being the DD. Our rules are the DD never has to use their car due to the fact that it may need to be cleaned up, and the DD never pays for food or soft drinks.

I am among the .3% and we usually take turns. By take turns I mean I am DD about 1 out of 10 times we go out. LOL My husband doesn't drink very much so he usually says something before we even leave the house that he will be the DD. Every once in a while (last night actually) he will ask me when are getting ready if I will be the DD and I do.

Yes, it is! I am an older college student and did most of my drinking when I was much younger. I don't usually go out with my classmates, but I have let them all know to call me if they need a ride and I will come get them.

if I'm out with my husband no need as he doesn't drink more than one if that. If it's a girls night out we call a cab or a husband...lol.

It's rarely an issue, as most of the people we hang around with don't drink, but on the rare occasions when one is needed for our group, it's usually me, as I can't drink at all. My body doesn't produce the enzyme that is necessary to process alcohol, and if I drink, I get VIOLENTLY ill.

Not being able to drink doesn't really bother me as I'm not particularly fond of the taste of alcohol, but if I make of fool of myself somehow, I can't blame it on being drunk!

My husband doesnt drink more than one unless we are on vacation.
I never have to be the DD.

Nope never been one. But I also have never had a drink of alcohol, my husband doesn't drink and neither do any of my friends.

When I played baseball the others would drink afterwards but that was them and they decided who would drive. I must say it is sometimes entertaining to watch people who are drunk.

In college and in my 20s my friends I use to take turns. There was usually one of use that ws too broke to spend money on drinking so it kind of worked out.

Now I don't drink as much as I use too, but we usually take the bus to Cambridge or Boston since a bus stop is within walking distance to my house. I tend to drink more during the summer at my friends house down at the Cape. Luckily she has the 2 bars everyone goes to in her neighborhood within walking distance to her house so we all just walk both ways or drive there and leave our cars there and walk back. Some nights though I think a desginated walker to walk us all home would be helpful.

I find it almost impossible to ride in a car and not be the driver. I have to be in charge in the car and it works best if I'm the driver and all my friends know this quirk about me and gladly let me drive.

One time we were away at a conference and we walked to a Mexican restaurant from the hotel and I thought Yea I finally get to have a few margarita's. Unbeknown to me I was supposed to be the "designated walker".

Opps they should have told me ahead of time. It took us an hour to find the hotel.

DH and I will take turns because our town doesn't have cabs. My girlfriends and I party out of town so we'll spring for a cab.

How do some of you guys have entire groups of friends that don't drink? I don't know many adults that don't drink at least sometimes.

usually my DH is my DD. But I embarrass myself enough sober, so I try not to over imbibe. That means when out with friends I am usually the DD.

When my girlfriends go out, our husbands drive us and pick us up. We return the favor. My husband rarely drinks but we switch if necessary.

How do some of you guys have entire groups of friends that don't drink? I don't know many adults that don't drink at least sometimes.

Well, I live in the Bible Belt, so... I mean don't you know even thinking about thinking about taking one sip of a drink is a sin punishable by the fires of hell! Only complete heathens go out drinking. The rest of us just get totally wasted in the backyard.

But, seriously, it's just not a big thing to do where I live. We don't really have very many bars, and the ones we do have aren't very nice. Plus, we have a lot of dry counties here. People don't really drink socially very much out as it is frowned upon. You have college kids out partying some, but even that is more house parties than anything, and then you have the druggies and junkies out at the really sketchy places or in the fields, but not very many normal adults really go out. People still drink. They just don't advertise it as much because there is still a kind of church stigma attached to it, even if you aren't really religious.

I have friends that drink and ones that don't, but none of us really go out drinking. I've never really seen the appeal to it. Just seems like a good way to waste a lot of money on something I don't care for and make a fool of myself or put myself possibly in a compromising position, so why bother.

In theory, sometimes. Our informal agreement is that whomever's event we are attending gets to drink and the other will be the driver. For instance, my sister's 40th birthday...I drank and he drove. In reality, if you ask my DH, I suck as a DD! I tend to forget the arrangement and he becomes the DD by default

Honestly, we don't go out much and if we do, we're way past the point where we want to spend much on alcohol when you can drink so much more cheaply at home!
