On disneyland.com without making park reservations? Just for the heck of it I went on disneyland.com to see if I could buy tickets for next summer's trip. After I type in the amount of tickets the only next option is reserve dates. Why can't I just buy tickets now and then make reservations when the time comes?

Ticket prices at DLR only vary by day/tier for 1 day tickets.

If you want to buy tickets in advance of plans or more than 120 days out you have two options.
1. Purchase from a third party seller like Undercover Tourist, Get Away Today or aRes travel. You can usually save a few bucks this way too
2. If you want to purchase through Disney, make reservations for some random days when you are purchasing tickets (if you're purchasing 1 day tickets make sure you purchase for the right tier for your future visit as this cannot be easily "upgraded" later) and then cancel the reservations after you purchase the tickets.

Because the ticket prices fluctuate depending on how busy the parks will be.

That's for WDW for multi day tickets. For DLR it's only different depending on the day for single day tickets.

They changed this after reopening. When they first sold reopening tickets you could purchase direct from Disney without making reservations. People complained because they bought tickets and couldn't get the dates they wanted after purchasing tickets (this was back when dates were actually selling out). It was changed to a system that requires reservations to purchase tickets direct from Disney.

You have a couple choices:

1) buy from Disney, make reservations for any random dates, cancel reservations, make reservations for the dates you actually want when they open up. Make sure to double check expiration date of tickets.

2) buy from an authorized third party.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I guess there's no rush. I won't be there again until August 2023.

I second the Undercover Tourist option. We use them almost every time. We used a Costco package for our Labor Day trip that was about $40 less than the DLR room discount and UCT tickets combined.

Purchase on website, link tickets after they arrive electronically (usually within minutes to hours) and then make park reservations. Simple and one of the few places to get a small ticket discount.

I bought my package through Costco (Walt Disney Travel Co). At 120 days out I was able to start making reservations for my trip.
