Are we going to get weird looks?

My wife and I have a trip planned for the end of Nov. Our baby is due Oct 8th. It will only be a month and half old when we go. Should we expect to have people look at us like we are crazy for having such a young child with us? I guess I should explain. The reason we are going then is we plan on relocating to Florida and will be checking out places to live while we are down there with a little Disney time sprinkled in. We figure that would be a good time to go since my wife will be on maternity leave and it will be slow at my work. We were going to stay off property but then my wife was like "We have DVC,why spend money to stay somewhere else". It not like we are even going to attempt to go on any rides because we have been there many times before,but my wife and I would like to take walks around world showcase and try to do a little relaxing by the pool with the baby. I am just afraid we are going to be looked at like we are members of the Bin Laden family for bringing such a small child. Im not going to have a sign on the stroller explaining our situation or anything and I dont want my wife to feel uncomfortable. Should I be worried?

Ask your pediatrician if a baby that young should be exposed to people like that. I only have one child (she is 9 years old now) so I forgot the time period a baby is allowed to be out. If the doctor says it's alright then go and enjoy and don't worry what people think.

As long as the doctor says it's acceptable that is the only criteria you should use to go on the tirp.

We took our youngest DS for the first time when he was only 4-5 weeks old. It was by far the easiest trip I had taken with him

Just go and have fun - don't worry about what other people think!

I agree with the previous poster. This is a far better time age wise to take you baby. It will sleep most of the time and be very happy in one of the front packs (if you use them), than maybe at 1 year old. I have two that are 13 months apart and have traveled with them since they were tiny. I think the only time people look at parents funny is when they aren't properly protected from the weather. Go and have a great time. Good luck on the relocation.

Just wanted to second the recommendation for using a good baby carrier (Baby Bjorn, or any of a number of slings work well). That way you'd minimize the baby's exposure to other people, and the carriers make it very easy to get on and off rides.

just back last week and saw loads of infants, some i would judge to be a month or so old.

I hope you won't get any looks- except those that coo and awe at a newborn!! My take is that you have a new addition to the family and where the family goes - everyone goes! Especially since you don't have to go commando there is no reason why you can't enjoy the trip with your new baby.

I second the front carrier/sling suggestion. I LOVED my sling - used a front carrier with the first but loved my sling with my 2nd. It was a lifesaver around the house (esp with a 2yo) and would be great at WDW. You can wear baby on some of the rides without a height restriction or into the shows if you wanted to.

Take your stroller and alternate time with the stroller and sling - esp if DH will wear baby as well. Its nice for baby to have some time to stretch out in the stroller. Make sure to get a clip on umbrella in addition to the stroller sunshade (no sunscreen for newborns). IMHO take a fully reclining regular stroller as its better for infants not to spend to much time in the carseat carrier. (Great for the grocery store and quick trips but not long stretches of time).

I don't think going out is an issue with a 6-8week old but I would probably mention it to the pediatrician just to be on the safe side.

she was born in october & we went to wdw for 7 days in december. it was really fun....i used my moby babywraps to carry her & i had a great time (pic of us at epcot at www.fairuzasball.com under the hugabub section) everyone that passed us while she was in the wrap made comments about how sweet she looked and how comfortable i looked. I even wore her in the wrap on the safari at AK. the wrap is based upon traditional baby carriers...it is basically long piece of fabric that wraps around your body. it is not constricting and it is not hot. It distributes the weight of the baby toward your body's core & not on your shoulders like a front pack. i wore her an average of 8 hours a day at wdw.

i did bring my stroller since we were flying & i wanted her carseat for the plane & rental car. we carried her in the wrap while on the bus (that kinda freaked me out)....i also left her with my husband in the stroller while we babyswaped...actually we just did fast pass bc it was faster & i didn't have to wait in the line.

most of the comments we got were along the lines of "that's a really new baby!" or (while nursing her) "i was right were you were last year!!!".

It was a great trip, i did have to slow it down. some nights i came in and crashed while the others went to epcot to see the fireworks.

You will have fun...take lots of pics bc the time will go by fast.
I would much rather go with a 7wk old than a 7mo other...esp this one who is really a fast crawler! (but i won't say no to another trip!!).

I could have written your post! I'm due any minute and we're going in Oct. The baby will be about 3-4 months old and we're going to Florida for the same reasons as you - we want to relocate there and since I'll be on maternity leave, my DH thought it would be great to take advantage of house hunting and Halloween at WDW!

Personally, I don't think you're crazy (obviously) but I would just check with your pediatrician about flying and being around large crowds. I plan to run it by our pediatrician as well.

But go and have fun!!!!

Thanks everyone for making me feel more comfortable about this. akrake,that wrap thing looks pretty cool and I like the idea that it wont get too hot so I am going to show my wife the link to them. I guess I just see how alot of people seem to think they know how to raise someone child better then the parents themselves, and I figured I might get some not so friendly looks like I am abusing a child. How can taking your child to Disney no matter what age be considered child abuse? Ha ha.

Now when dd was 3 months I had to take her on a trip with DS's hockey team to Colorado, so I bought a front sling, it was wonderful! I could nurse and feel protected, when I used it during Thanksgiving, people thought she was sleeping and left her alone (hockey tourney then too!)

7 years later I'm sure there are lots of options, and each is different, but I'd check them out, and definately practice before you went -

also I had dd in the sling on the airplane, I strapped my seatbelt thru the bottom of the sling, we didnt have any air currents, or incidents... but my mind was calmed!!

As long as it's OK with the Dr I wouldn't worry about it. I believe people get a lot more "strange" looks with an infant that young when it's 100 degrees out. I would think the fall would be a perfect time.

You may get a few looks or well meaning people saying that they didn't leave the house for 6 months... We took our third child out in public at two days old. She is by far my healthiest child. As long as your baby is full term and in good health I wouldn't worry, and as for what other people think- who cares. For some unknown reason having an infant with you will cause some people (strangers and relations) to tell you how you should live your life. You will learn quickly to smile and nod and then do what ever you decide is best. Congratulations on the baby. They are such blessings.
