Are we crazy? Considering resort only-Summer

Can you imagine how crowded the pools will be if the parks are closed? Sounds like a lot of folks would be ok with resort only stay if pools are open , none of these pools were designed for resort stay only scenario , let alone given social distancing requirements. Like a lot of people have said , SSR and OKW are probably the best options with Disney springs and lots of nice areas to stroll within the resort

So if the pool is too crowded and you are in an OKW one bedroom or larger, just hop in the jetted tub and spend your time there.

We are seriously considering resort only vacation in the summer. I know many restrictions will be in play. I’m ok with that and plan on taking precautions with my family as well. We are not in the vulnerable group and honestly I think 2 of us have already had it. Anyone thinking about this?
I think it is a great idea. For several years I have schemed to get a couple of days to spend relaxing, chilling by the pool, catchin some rays. But every year a child and/or grandchild has been there with different ideas including getting out of bed at 3 am to grab a shot at rise of the resistance. Life is full of choices and yours seem great to me.

I think you could do this, but with the caveat to really check your expectations. It sounds like you're doing this. I don't really see us going back til the parks are open. If I were doing resort only, it'd be at HHI or VB. I don't even know when they can reopen the pools, so I'd pick summertime or fall, so we could swim in the ocean. We canceled our June trip back in March. We do have an extended family vacation scheduled for Nags Head in late July. Still really hoping we can do that.

How old are your kids? I can't imagine our grandkids would be happy being at WDW and not being able to go in to the parks. They love the pools and the resorts, but look forward to the parks and the attractions. If they couldn't go in to the parks, then they would much rather be at a beach hotel.

For that reason, I'm actually hoping that the DVC resorts open later, rather than sooner. If the rooms open, and the park doesn't, then we wouldn't want to go. Unfortunately we have a lot of points tied up in DVC for a trip that was suppose to begin on May 23rd. From my interpretation of the Corona cancellation policies, if the DVC resorts open, then we don't get our points back. Without the points being put back, then we probably won't have enough points for next year.

We didn't buy DVC for a place to go and stay, we bought because we wanted a place to stay when we go to the parks.

Our kids are 16 and 18. We are just looking for cheap place for us to get away. Beach is great idea but we don’t have points there. I guess we could always look to switch into RCI.

I would love HHI be an option. No availability lol

I'm considering this right now, too. We have a weekend in July booked in studio and Labor Day weekend in a 1 bedroom (birthday trip for DNiece). We're healthy middle aged moms with teens, so low-risk health-wise for travelling, we live within drive-able distance. Both us and teens will be super happy to do one resort-only trip if there are at least a few restaurants open, and a pool. But we don't want to do multiple resort-only trips.

If I knew the parks would be open in September we'd love to go in July resort-only. I suspect the VGC but not parks will be open in July from Newsom's announcement yesterday, but its the lack of vision on Labor Day that is making me think we should just move the July trip to next April. Plus, if we're going to do one resort-only trip I'd rather have it be in the 1 bedroom instead of the studio.

I also strongly suspect the pool won't be that full at the VGC if the parks are still closed since the villas only have 48 rooms out of the 1000+ that can be booked at the Grand Californian, so it would be very pleasant. Not many people would want to pay the cash prices to stay at the Grand if the parks are closed ...

Disney needs to sell a crystal ball with Mouse Ears to tell me what the fall will look like .... :upsidedow

We’re still hanging in there for early August’s land portion of planned trip. The cruise portion has been shelved. DVC Points need to be banked the end of May though.

If there isn’t a huge turnaround in things, probably will save them & book CRO

It’s flying that gives me pause. 20+ hours driving is too long for us with back issues. Had a rough enough time flying to Hawaii & splitting it over two-six hour flights last year.

It's been pretty much figured out that the DVC will open June 1st. Otherwise, they would not have come out with their point fix for April/June......they would have waited in case of August issues.

I am booked July 17th to the 25th, staying at Boardwalk. My air is booked and I planned on getting my AP passes before the 60 day mark in order to get my FPs. At this point, I am thinking of NOT going into the parks at all. I really dont want to buy APs for 5 people if the parks arent ALL open which includes all attractions. We only go once a year and YES tix are Expensive. Considering doing a hotel vacation if the pools and restaurants are open. I was told I could cancel 31 days prior if the parks are open so that is what I will do. I will bank the majority of my points and hope for a summer vacation next year. Holding my breath like everyone else to see what will happen in these very Un-Magical Times.

We currently have June 7-18 booked in a 2BR at OKW. Am really hoping that happens, but don't think we would want to do that whole trip if the parks are closed. I'm probably willing to do it if they're open with modifications, but not entirely closed. Of course, now we're nearing the 31 day rule, and I'm really not convinced they're going to continue waiving that if they open the Resorts without the parks.

Unless they announce more info during the Q2 earnings report today (which I could see them doing), I'll probably start walking the start of the trip forward and just assume there will be enough availability to move it back later.

We had an OKW stay planned for June but cancelled. The pools will probably be just as packed as the parks, especially if parks are closed. But really it is about air travel for us right now.
