Are Tripods allowed at Disney?

This may sound strange, but I was told that tripods weren't allowed at Disney because they wanted to discourage professional photographers from taking pictures there. We're going on a family vacation on Thursday and it will be my in-laws first trip to WDW ever! My FIL is an avid photographer and he wants to bring his tripod. Will he be hassled or is this allowed?

Thanks!

I don't know what the official policy is but I've seen people using tripods at WDW. Now that I think about it I have usually seen this in out-of-the-way places and don't think I've seen it at all post-9/11.

Hopefully someone can give you a definitive answer on this.

EDIT:
I just checked out your WTC Tribute website. Very moving and absolutely gorgeous photos. Did your FIL take them? They are incredible!

I have seen tripods at WDW. I think it is a policy that is inconsistently enforced. I would bring the tripod and keep my fingers crossed. My last visit, I used a monopod and did get asked a question to make sure I wasn't going to "sell" any photos. The tripod would be most helpful for any night shooting.

I'm not sure what the official policy is, but I've seen people with tripods there. I've seen a lot more people with monopods lately though. I would think a tripod might be rather bulky to have to haul around all day, and might take that into consideration when packing.

I too have used tri and monopods, though always the small ones that can telescope and put into my hip bag. I do think they would be fine, as long as you are not looking like a camera crew doing 'a shoot'. And as Aprille said, I too looked at the WTC tribute, very stunning and sad, what memories of great structures, symbols and so many lives. A wonderful tribute. Thanks for sharing.

I have carried a tripod on almost every WDW vacation we have been on. I use a very small, inexpensive one, and usually use a bungie cord to attach it to the stroller. I use mine for my camcorder, especially when taping the parade. This gives me a very consistent recording, and saves on the sore arm. I control the camcorder with a remote control. I have never had any problems bringing this into any park.

Thanks, everyone. I'll relay the info. to my FIL.

The pix on the WTC site were taken mostly by my husband. He used to bring his camera on the way to work sometimes. Thanks for your kind words.

Take care,
Adele

The only place I've ever been told I *couldn't* use a tripod (or even as a monopod) was during Fantasmic.

My father had a miniature tripod that he took with him places.......I'm guessing he would have been allowed into DisneyWorld with this thing, it was so small and you didn't really know what it was to look at it.

Might I also add my "WOW" to your tribute site? Incredible.....the nicest tribute I've ever seen I think.

Thankyou so much for sharing it here.
