Are there safes in the cabins?

Just trying to figure out where to store our passports or birth certs while enjoying our cruise!

They sure do, in the closet!

You use your Key To The World card to lock it and open it.

It was great having the safe in the room.

Just a word of caution - it is small, and won't fit cameras, laptops etc. But it is great for those travel documents, your cash, credit cards etc.

Unless you have a HUGE camera, a camera will fit.

We used an old ATM card. You have to use the same card to open it each time and we never knew when we would need to get something out of the safe. We hid the card in the room. It just needs to have the magnetic strip. :)

It is about 10wX8dX6h approximately. Big enough to hold all of your passports, wallets, jewelry and cameras. Here are a couple of pictures I took knowing that this question would be asked. One has a pack of gum in the back and the other has my glasses for reference.

Wow, that's surprising! I would never have imagined. It would have saved a lot of trouble for us to use your system instead. When my KTTW managed to demagnetize itself, maintenance had to come and open the safe.

Your card demagnetized too? I had to call guest services to open our safe too. It was odd. My KTTW card worked fine for opening the door but wouldn't open the safe. I always kept my KTTW card in its own pocket in my trousers, away from my wallet and other cards. The only thing that was close to my card for any duration of time was the FRS radio. That has a magnet in there for the speaker.

Hey Pineapple! :Pinkbounc

Yup. Must have been all that time we spent in the internet cafe. :cool1: Either that or we're just magnetic personalities. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

My KTTW continued to open the room door, too. Funny how it also managed to work for all those purchases I continued to make...I was by far the most prolific spender in the family. :rolleyes1

The safe is real handy. Just don't do what we did...it seems that once you use the safe with one occupant's KTTW card, no other card can be used. I used mine and then like an idiot couldn't figure out why DH couldn't use his. :sad2: Boy I did I feel dumb when I finally figured that one out!!!

To clarify for those unfamiliar, you must re-open the safe with the same card which locked it. Once it's unlocked, another person can use their card. Or, in the case of the clever person who posted before, you can just use an old ATM card! (I'm still marveling over that one.)

I'm glad you clarified because I learned even more from your post. Gosh, 6 years of college and I'm beaten down by a little magnetic strip puzzle!! :rotfl:

Actually, any card with a magnetic stripe can be used to lock and unlock the safe. It doesn't have to be a KTTW card. When the safe is locked, it just remembers what was on the stripe of the card that was swiped. To unlock the safe, the same card must be used. It is possible to use a different card every time you lock the safe, but that might get confusing. Many people use the KTTW card because you always have it handy while on board

As been said before, you have to use the same key to unlock as you did to lock. :)
But, on our last cruise, we made sure that we used the same key each time. Half way through the cruise, it would not unlock. Tried the other key. Would not unlock. Called guest services and they sent someone down. He unlocked it and told us we needed to use the same key to unlock as we locked it with.
O.K., after we came back, tried to unlock. Nope. Another call and another maintenance man. Hmmm. This time he says that it needs a new battery, but he doesn't do those. Another person does. Hour later the battery person shows up and TaDa! no more problems.
So, if you follow the rules and use the same card and it still doesn't work, call the battery person. :earsboy:

I'm not taking the credit for this one. :) I read it here on the DIS when I first joined up.
