Has anyone every used or noticed pay phones at the docks in Nassau? Do any calling cards or pre-paid phone cards work from the Bahamas?

YES! Atleast there used to be!...we used 1 to call home a few years ago!

I have a Sam's Club phone card and an AT&T phone card that I was not able to use on those phones in Nassau.

I have a Sam's Club AT&T phone card and the only Port I have found I can use it at is Cozumel.

I placed a call home from the pay phones in Nassau on our last cruise....I wanted to check on my cats  Silly I know! It was like $14.95 per minute. My pre-paid calling card didn't work and I used a credit card.

Consumer Reports just did a big deal on calling cards. I know in St. Thomas and St. Martin there are big signs on some payphones that say "No Calling Cards".
Consumer Reports found some phone providers that accept phone cards have funny systems for taking money from your calling card.
They pay charge in 6 minute incriments. So a 1 minute call costs you 6 minutes time, a call that is 6 minutes and 1 second costs you 12 minutes time, and some cards hit you with a 10 minute connection fee.

"Laka Waka Fiji !!!!!!" :rotfl2:

(anyone remember that?) :rolleyes1

Man, I'm getting ridiculous...now I'm going to bed!!!

When you are buyinh a phone card - you have to buy an international card that works from outside the US into the US. Most sold here work the other way - from inside to outside the US. I ran into this while in Canada last June, and in Nassau in the past.

I saw phones in the reception area last November, but I didn't notice if they took phone cards or not. There are also a couple of phones on the main street in the middle of the town shopping strip.

Hope that helps a little bit.

I remember the phones at Nassu dock specifically stated they don't take AT&T phone cards.

Yes, as mentioned there are phones there. Yes, as mentioned, imagined my shock when I saw my credit card bill for $35!!!!!! :earseek:  I was appalled at the price and kinda feel if Disney can tell you where to shop they should warn you that it's $15/min to use the phones right next to their boat. What I did find out is that you have to take a short walk off the pier to the 1st building where the straw market is located inside and you can purchase a phone card for 15 or so minutes for $5!!!!! It has a gold chip and can be used at the phones, not located directed next to the ship but on the phones closer to the water which I guess are owned by a telephone company on the island. (That's a horrible discription, I apologize, but a picture is worth a thousand words and once you are there, it would make more sense.) There are actually phones right in the same building you purchase the phone cards in also. In any event, I hope that helps people not to get caught offguard like I did!!!!! :earsboy:

So basically it's cheaper to make calls from the ship (even if it's in port) and pay the approximate $6-7/min ship-to-shore rate.

And to answer the question about cell phone coverage, I have Verizon Wireless and had no coverage. :earsboy:
