Are there any rides that should NOT be rope-dropped?

Not sure if either is open right now, but I wouldn't do StorybookLand Canal Boats or the Nemo submarines the first hour. Both are slow loaders, longer rides, and don't cycle many boats early. It took us an entire Early Entry morning doing the subs.

I personally prefer to knock out 3-4 Fantasyland rides in the first hour, keeping an eye on Matterhorn to be sure it's open before heading over there.

Nemo is still closed, boats are open

I don't recommend slow boat based attractions at rope drop such as Jungle Cruise, It's a Small World or Pirates.

I've found that Alice in Wonderland and Indiana Jones open late quite often.

For the big attractions such as Rise of the Resistance and Radiator Springs Racers, you have to be at the front of the pack for the rope drop to be worth it.

There's also lots of little attractions that are not worth it because the lines are short most of the day: Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, Davy Crockett Canoes, Main Street Vehicles, Winnie the Pooh, etc.

I will never rope drop Rise again.
My daughter and I decided to rope drop it on one of the busier mornings. We got out of bed very very early to rope drop Rise. We got to the security check very early and waited... forever. We got into the park then waited at park gate. We got into the park and waited at the rope for rope drop. We very very close to the front. The rope dropped (and I am ashamed to admit it), but we broke the rules and ran to Rise. A few teenagers were faster runners than us, but we made it!! We were very close to the front of the line. After a bit of a wait the CM's allowed us to enter the official queue. My daughter and I were sooo excited; we did it! The line proceeded to right before the briefing room and.... we stopped. We waited 45 minutes before they made the announcement that there was an issue and you can leave the queue if you wanted to. Of course, nobody did because everyone in line went through what we went through to get there. About 20 minutes after that they announced that the ride was closed and we'd all have to leave. The entire line was vacated. I thought after all that waiting and we got soooo close that we would get a Fastpass (LL) or something. "No," was the curt answer.
Meanwhile, the rest of my family woke up later well-rested. They sat and had breakfast. They leisurely walked into the park and rode 2 or 3 rides before my daughter and I got out of Rise... and we did our best not to let it ruin the rest of our day!
That sounds incredibly frustrating!

What time did they get there? We’ve always rope dropped. My kids are morning people but it’s hard for them to wait at the gates before they open. At the same time I don’t want to show up an hour after opening and the lines are back to the bus loading. I don’t know how to be laid back at Disneyland. This trip we’ll be 10 people so I really need to be for this trip to be successful!

I feel like you can never regret rope dropping! The first few hours are just glorious and sets the mood for the day (for me!). Getting there even an hour or two after park opening it is so much more crowded … longer security lines, lines to get in the parks, then lines for the attractions. I say, don’t doubt yourself lol.

I recently brought a friend and her kids who have only been a few times (and frankly didn’t have the best of times) and toured them around my style. It was a little bit of a hard sell to get her to rope drop but after we did it she was a complete convert and said it was absolutely the best thing ever and so worth it. She tells anyone who will listen how they had the best Disney day ever with me and that they rode 10 rides in the first few hours of their day (this was pre-Genie+ mind you).

That said, definitely don’t rope drop Rise of the Resistance! It may not be open, or it may immediately go down. Plus it’s a LONG ride between the wait and the ride itself. So risky and such a waste of the golden hours of early morning in my opinion! Line usually drops down at some point during the day, especially right before 1pm when people are leaving to park hop but before the new park hoppers have entered DL.

In case you hadn't thought of this, splitting people up into groups based on interest for part of the time is a great idea. Some people can do more intense thrill rides while others can do tamer dark rides, and hopefully everyone is happy. You can ask people to do meals together and plan roughly when and where to eat meals in advance, so you'll still get to spend time together.

Thanks for the idea. My kids can’t stay in the parks long so I think the relatives will circle around us until we go to hotel. We don’t live by them so they like to join our vacation. Then they’ll have the rest of the day to shop, eat and maybe do some rides. Lol
