Are there any exceptions?

To the holding rule?
I ask, because we are supposed to leave for our first DVC trip to OKW in 10 days, and my mother has cancer and was just hospitalized on Thursday. She has not been able to be stablized and she took a turn for the worse tonight and I have no idea what the next few days will entail... I'm still hoping she comes home before the weekend and is able to go to Disney herself on Sunday. (We were meeting my parents down there for her birthday and my anniversary)

I don't want to sound like a cold hearted *****, the points are obviously not my main concern right now, but in an attempt to distract myself from what's going on I turned to the disboards and thought I might as well ask.

The points we booked with were banked from our 2009 use year. There are only 108 of them(3 from 2010), and the rest of our 2010 points have been banked.

Do you think there is any chance of them just putting the points back into our use year or is it for sure they will be put into holding if we cannot go on this trip?

Also, can someone explain to me exactly how holding works, since I can't seem to find the energy to go and look for it myself?

Lastly, do you think it would be worth it to purchase the Trip Insurance to help offset the loss of this trip or is it too late since we are so close to the trip?

Thanks for any advice you can give and if it's not too much to ask your prayers and good thoughts for my mom are welcome and appreciated as well.

I am so sorry for what you're going through. I'll let someone else answer your questions regarding how it all works but I can tell you my father died while we were on the plane to Florida. I found out in the Orlando airport when I turned my phone on. We turned around to take the next flight home. I called to cancel our reservation. They didn't let us have our points back. I was able to put them in holding and then rent them to a nice person who needed them quickly. It all worked out. I don't blame Disney--they have to abide by their policies.

I definitely wouldn't blame Disney, I understand policy. I also understand that with so many members my situation is not unique and they probably get this question or request often enough that they cannot make any exceptions... I guess I'm just looking for info. I'm hoping if we need to cancel it is not for a funeral, and simply to postpone a few days until my mom is well enough to join us... at this point, wishes and hopes, and positive energy is all I've got.

I am so sorry and wish you well. :grouphug:

I cancelled 3 days before a trip. (Nov 2010) My husband needed major surgery. I did not ask if they could skip holding. I told them why I was cancelling, they put them in holding. I thought this was very generous for a policy. Airfare I lost everything. All dining I was able to cancel and our tour we were able to reschedule until our next trip.
I suspect there is not many exceptions if any.

I didn't mean to be a downer. I'm sure your mom will be ready for a wonderful WDW vacation very soon. I'm sending good thoughts your way.

Not a downer, I appreciate you sharing your experience and taking the time to send good thoughts. Thank you.

My mom's funeral was the day we were supposed to check into BWV but no exception was made for us. Our points went into holding when I called a few days ahead. There may be CMs who will make an exception, however. Wishing you and your mom well.

As with everything there are always exceptions. It is just whether the person you talk to is willing to do it.

Wishing your Mom the best.

Also no exception for us when my mother passed away 6 days before we were to depart on our trip.

My step dad was burried at Arlington the day we were to leave I knew in plenty of time at least one month out but my rule of 4 was in effect and they put my points in holding.

:grouphug: Hope your mom gets better! And that you're able to enjoy your trip, whether now or later. Good luck! pixiedust:

If your points are in holding you can only book 60 days or less in advance. The other issue is when do the points expire?

I think you have to purchase the trip insurance when you make the reservation but you could call and double check on that one. The new trip insurance is different than previous ones. Also check to be sure exactly what circumstances are coered by it.

I hope your mother does well and that you all get to have a great trip.

Thank you for all of your replies and well wishes.
I appreciate you sharing your experiences with me and I am sorry for all of your losses.

I think i got confused by the holding account, and confused it with reservarion points.
I believe we would be able to travel at another time on the points just dont know when.

I spoke with someone about the insurance, and it seems that i can add it whenever i want but then i read the whole policy myself and it seems my mom would be a pre-existing condition and would not be covered which absolutely makes sense on their part.

I hope to hear from my dad and her doctor in a few hours. Hopefully I will be back with good news.

My prayers are with you at this difficult time. Hopefully things will take a turn for the better with your mom.

Sending you and your family prayers & positive thoughts. I don't have an answer to the holding question - just wanted you to know I feel for you at this difficult time.

So sorry to hear about your situation.

If you dud qualify for trip insurance, what would that cover? Points Airfare?
