Are the pools filled with chlorinated or salt water?

A friend told me that the pools on cruise ships are sometimes filled with saltwater?

Does anyone know about this?

Chlorinated, and believe me, from what goes on in those pools, it's a good thing....

Funny, on a different travel board, the same thing was said about the Hedonism II resort...

Now THAT'S a reason to say eeeewwwww!!!!

I think it's still salt water...chlorinated or not. They pump the sea water, purify it and pump it into the pools. Correct me if I'm wrong..but I think that's what they do. That's how when they get floaters in the micky pool...they can drain it and fill it back up...(happened at least 4 times on our cruise)

It is actually fresh water, made from salt water. DCL has a de-salinator on the ship, that's where all the drinking water comes from also. The salt water is processed and turned into fresh water, it is then put into the pools, as well as the drinking supply. Chemicals are added to the pool, though not to the drinking water!!!

That is pretty much what I was saying. They get the salt water...clean it up and use it onboard. :D

If I remember correctly they use reverse-osmosis to purify the sea water.

Jill, are you kidding about the floaters??? Four times in one week? That is absolutely disgusting. Is that from kids who aren't diapered and poop in the pool? I can't believe that! Gross.

The pools are the least attractive thing about the cruise for us....I think they are just filthy and overcrowded

Then again, if I were from Michigan, I might think differently...(cold climate)

I agree...the adult pool was pretty clean the whole cruise but the Mickey pool EWWWWWW and the Goofy pool by the middle of the day was so cloudy you can't see the bottom. They closed the Mickey pool at least twice during our last cruise for "floaters" and once for puke. People who know their kids are not potty trained ignore the rules and think its their right to bring their kids in the pool and then they ruin it for all the others for hours while they have to empty and clean out their "mess"

All the water on board the Magic and Wonder is desalinized sea water. And according to the cruise ship inspection website, it is all chlorinated and well as filtered. The drinking water just has less chlorine in it. The drinking water chlorinization system is one of the things they inspect.

The three guest pools on board ship are treated so they are fresh water pools. The Cast Member pool, however, remains a saltwater pool.

Yes, I was on that cruise with Scrapperjill and it was in the Mickey pool. I know that one time a kid got sick and another time was a floater. EEEWWW!! Both times were later in the day, so at least the pool was not closed for the day. Oh well, I guess accidents do happen, especially with a bunch of liitle ones in a small area. At least Disney was quick to take action.

Oh My ... that is so Gross. I was so looking forward to swimming in the pool with my daughter, and watching her fly down the Mickey Slide, but now I will think about what I've read and try to divert her to other activities...
I can't believe they dont enforce little kids to wear "swimmies" those diaper like swimpants, or that the parents would allow it! EW!!!

Guess we have to swim VERY early in the AM, or not at all! :scared1:

I have to tell you, sometimes the "floaters" or sickness doesn't come from non-potty trained kids. When we were on the Magic, the pool closed once to my knowledge, and the CM's were DEFINATELY enforcing the potty-trained rule. Some parents were actually irate that their little ones couldn't even place their toes in the pool. The Mickey Pool and Goofy Pool DEFINATELY get cloudy as the day wears on, but most of it is from all the sunscreen that is washed off the children. I did try to keep my kids pool activities to the morning hours, so the pool water was fresher.

Edited to add: This can happen anywhere. We've been at WDW resorts when the pool has been closed to a "protein spill" or some other foreign object being in the pool. This has actually happened more at the WDW resorts to us than any of the DCL pools.

Unless you have a private pool in your backyard, you'll have to completely omit pool fun from your life, then. That's what chlorine is for. If an "accident" or "Protine spill" (lol-- haven't heard that one before) happens, they close the pool and fix the problem, replacing with fresh clorinated water. Yeah, gross, but not unique to DCL pools.

I do have a pool in my backyard, so I aplogize for the "freak out"! I guess I am spoiled, but I know I do tell (fib) to youngsters swimming in my own pool that a big bright purple ring will appear around them if they pee in my pool! I think they are so scared of the ring they wouldnt dare! Hahaha.
I also make sure after they put one foot in the water they back out, and go to the potty, as that usually triggers it!
