Are the "experts" ever satisfied?

I was reading an article today that the baby name experts were blasting Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick for choosing names that were "too old fashioned." So if you pick a name out of the norm you're a weirdo, if you pick family names you are old fashioned. Are we just suppose to name every little girl Brittany and every little boy Brandon? Why can't we just let parents name their kid whatever they want without commentary?

Just curious, what names did they choose?

The names are unsual in that you won't see many other kids with them. That's always nice. My only quibble is that they named their daughter Marion (traditional male spelling) instead of Marian (traditional female spelling).

Just wondering...what kind of credentials does one need to become a "baby name expert"? That sounds like an interesting job.

Sounds good to me.

Who are these supposed experts anyway? Its no ones business what someone names their children.

I will say my grandmother was MariOn. If she was alive today she would be 102yo....so that is an old fashion name. BUT Tabitha...reminds me of the tv show BEWITCH. Is that an old fashion name? I am guessing there is a family meaning behind both names. Not real popular names but definitely lovely names. :goodvibes

And then everyone will call her Marianne all the time. My first name is MariOn as was my mothers, and a great aunts as well as several otherfemales in the family. I don't understand why you are bothered by it.

Also, I would like to know what these "experts" names are and what they have or will name their children.

Oh...I am glad to see you and your mom and your great aunt also spelled MariOn with an O...my grandmother was with an O and my parents have MariOn as a middle name for my sister and she absolutely LOVES it...has a nice sound to it.....Jeanne Marion!!! :goodvibes

I actually had no idea that the O was male????

I like Marion, and wasn't that the real name of Mrs. Cunningham?

Whodathunk that I'd actually like a celebrity's offspring names?

I just wish they'd stop taking the names I had picked out. (Not that I'm getting preggers any time soon). I love Hazel and Tabitha.

I am just guessing that the "experts" wanted Sarah Jessica Parker to be cutting edge with names because she is otherwise very stylish. I think it is great that people are resurrecting older, classic names. One of my children is named Margaret, after my grandmother. People should do what works for them, but I really wish they would remember that the babies they are naming will one day be adults who need to navigate the world.

I've never seen "Marion" spelled any other way than "Marion." And the only man I've ever known named "Marion" was John Wayne.

The only Tabitha I've ever heard of in real life is Stephen King's wife. I'm guessing she's in her 50s, so that pre-dates Bewitched!

Marion Loretta Elwell Broderick and Tabitha Hodge Broderick.

I don't think the experts are ever satisfied. It never seems that they are anyway.

A few thoughts:

It's none of my business what they named their kids.:thumbsup2

That said (lol), I think Tabitha is cute and poor Marion's name is very unattractive. They don't "match" at all...

Then again, SJP might think my kids' names are hideous.:confused3 To each her own!

One of my best friends (female) from college is named Marian. I always thought Marion was the male spelling, but I think there are some cultures/languages (maybe Gaelic) where the female version is spelled Marion.

Maybe the kids are named after loved ones. They named their son after Matthew's father. So maybe they're family names.
