are the bugs bad at Disney in August?

thanks for telling me about the August thread!

I remember being a girl staying in my grandparents' Florida mobile home and seeing a Florida roach for the first time. Now my grandmother was a total clean freak so I was shocked. I screamed bloody murder. I like the lizards, though

I'll keep the snow and you guys can keep your giant mutant roaches, lol

I just picked up a travel size bug spray for our trip and it was $8! I'll need to get a big bottle if the bugs are bad

any experience with those pocket fans? I was going to buy the water mist ones but they were huge and heavy so I got small two bladed fans that should fit in our purses.

I went last September, the 5th....and was so annoyed at the love bugs in my hair and people picking them out. I would take those pocket wipes of OFF and if you could a hat your hair could pull back in. I bought a visor and twisted my poney tail into a bun to help.

It wasn't that they were in my face, it was the hair. Ugh!

Yes, there will be bugs whenever you come down here. It's not as noticeable at Disney because they do employ different things to help control the infestation, think ladybugs as "good" bugs for example. Think about it, we're talking about theme parks and hotels built on swamp land.

The two times when they were most noticeable for our party include mosquitoes while waiting for the train at Fantasyland, and there were a lot of gnats or something once while waiting for the boat at Fort Wilderness. That time, even the boat captains were commenting about how ridiculous the infestation was. Love bugs are incredibly annoying, but they don't bite or do anything, other than annoy people (and ruin the paint finish on your car).. but they are generally bad during May and September.

We have been there a few times in July and August and the bugs were BAD- not in the parks but at the hotel we got bitten a lot. My daughter, until she was about 9, had bad reactions to bug bites and had to take antibiotics 90% of the time when she was bitten and even with bug spray on she was still bitten there- one trip she was bit a few times in one night and we ended up having to have the traveling Dr come to the hotel room- while I was waiting outside for him I had about 10 bug bites on my face.

Definitely the south has more bugs and more of them at certain times of the year, and August is one of them. Up here in Maryland we have our share of Mosquitos, spiders, flys, even love bugs. It's the heat that makes it the worst. Since our summers don't get very hot for very long, our bugs are tolerable and short lived. Still we need screened in areas to eat outside in the summer. Not like the west where I did not see one bug while traveling in California!

Have been going to Disney for many years and never have been bothered by bugs. The only ones I've seen are around the lampposts at night and would be no bother unless you were standing under the lamp (haven't even seen this in any of the parks).

We use the pocket fan/misters - nothing will keep you very cool when the temps and humidity are high - like mostly May-October, with some exceptions.

I'm a southern girl and it seems lots of people think of bugs only in the south, but for us, the worse time we have 'ever' had was the time we were in Acadian National Park (in Maine) and the black flies nearly packed us away, and their bites were fierce!! Just couldn't get away from them outside. I've never had bugs that bad down south even on the farm near a river.

We have been to Disney many times in August and just the summer time in general. I have never had a bad experience with bugs at the Disney resorts. Disney really keeps the bugs and mosquitos under control.

There are bugs in Florida. Don't get yourself in a tizzy over them, but realize that you might see them no matter when /where you are. It's a part of life!
This is coming from the gal who's allergic to everything and constantly has welps from bug bites. Just gotta deal with it.

Other than an occasional mosquito, we have never had any issues with bugs while at Disney. That includes last August. We were at POR last year and right on the river.

I'm sure there are places where there are higher levels of mosquitos, flies and bees. We have never seen more than a few for the entire trip and don't think we ever brought bug spray.

As a PP said, the campgrounds may have a lot more than the resorts that are not near water sources.
