Are Servers Smarter Than Their Customers?

Does it seem to you like the people who make their living catering to tourists are more worldly than the tourists that they serve? I have noticed that waiters, maids, etc. often know multiple languages and other things not known by the customers who looked down upon them as "unskilled labor." What are your thoughts about this?

Yes- I do think most servers are smarter than their customers, after spending about 16 years in the field.
