are rough seas typical?

We have cruised eastern cruises and western cruises. When the ship crosses the Gulf Stream it is bumpy, I have the opinion it is a bit worse in the winter months than when we have crossed it in August. Our January cruises seem to be the most rocky when crossing it. A hurricane would be the worse scenario for the ship to be rocking.

We have never been sea sick but I do suggest if you are prone to take precaution for the first night. If I remember correctly from a post on the DIS that the medication works better before one gets sick. It also seems that children are not as sensitive to the motion as adults can be.

One observation, When sailing the eastern, when heading south is when it is the most windy and the ship will rock. When the ship turns and heads back north the sailing is smooth and hardly any wind. When we have sailed the western the day as sea going back is the most windy. Kathy

I've read that you are supposed to avoid alcohol when taking Meclizine because it increases the drowsiness. Medical web sites and warnings with the prescription say this. What experiences have any of you had taking sea sick medications and alcohol? I'd hate to not be able to try those great "specialty cocktails" with dinner.
