Are reservations absolutely needed for DTD?

I'm heading to disney in mid may, and while we made ADR for the Park Restaurants and Character Meals, we did not make one for Downtown disney. Is it absolutely needed? How long should the waits be? I have been to DTD quite often and don't recal there ever being a major wait, but have things changed in the last few years?

Our last trip was July 2009, but we made no reservations for DTD and ate at Trex and Rainforest Cafe at dinnertime. We were told about 1 to 1 1/2 hr wait each time, we were given a beeper, then we looked around inside the restaurant or whatever, I sat with the baby asleep in the stroller and hubby and older kids shopped at Lego store, etc. Waiting at Trex, we let the kids play in the dino dig area and the time passed very quickly. So, unlike the parks, no a ressie is NOT necessary. HTH
