Are passports necessary?

I have just finished reading the thread on Passports from earlier this morning. This is our first cruise and our first time traveling out of the country. Do we really need to purchase passports? I know we don't have to have them, that our birth certificates and photo ids are enough. But from some experienced Disney cruisers, what are your opinions? Is it easier?

i don't think passports are any eaiser me and my dh do have them my 4 kids do not and it did not seem to make any difference we anly showed the passports at the checkin at the terminal after that anytime we got on or off we had to show our picture id so whichever you choose do not forget picture id as well.
