Are older folks sailing?

Are seniors cruising even though the CDC says being part of the vulnerable population during covid it's really not safe? What are your thoughts?

Well, I suspect the number of younger passengers is down on DCL since those under 12 can't be vaccinated. My neighbor is 70 and his wife is 64 and they have been trying to cruise, they went about 6 weeks ago, but their two Viking cruises for next year have been cancels because too many of the ports have said they won't be accepting cruise ships yet.

Define older, because my DD would answer, "yeah, my mom went," but I would protest that at 49, I'm not old yet. :rolleyes1

But I will say there were a good amount of passengers on my cruise that appeared to be in the 65-80 age range. Granted, I didn't go around carding people, and it's possible some of those older appearing folks are just 30-something year old parents that have been stuck homeschooling their kids for the last 18 months.

Everyone has to decide what their own risk tolerance is. There are 80 year olds that feel perfectly safe traveling right now and 50 year olds that haven't left their house in 18 months. It's up to you if you feel it's safe for you to cruise right now. I will say that with the COVID protocols and low passenger counts on the ships right now, we felt much safer on our cruise than we did at WDW.

As a pair of 66 yo's fear of covid is not keeping us from cruising, the vaccination requirement is. We have chosen not to get the vaccine and please don't turn this thread into a pro/con discussion. It is our choice and we continue to travel - Disney World, Branson, MO, Las Vegas. As long as the requirement is there, we'll be vacationing on dry land with no fear of Covid.

I work for an elite expedition company. We take small groups of about 8-14 people to exotic locales around the globe in search of elusive wildlife..tigers in India...polar bears in Iceland .... Emporer penguins in Antarctica, etc. Although we dont do Disney at all, I can say that older folks are traveling in droves right now. We just ran a trip to Caucasus Georgia and the average age was about 70. Weve charted the Sea Cloud (EF Hutton's old yacht.. what a gem!) for a trip through Lesser Antilles next spring and its sold with mostly seniors.

A 30 year old coworker just died of Covid. We’re all taking a chance. I frankly think a cruise where everyone 12 and up is vaxxed and everyone tests negative is a heckuva lot safer than most things these days. CDC seems to have a weird grudge against cruises that borders on irrational.

As "older folks" my wife and I (both of us are 73) sailed on the Disney Fantasy's first cruise since the shutdown on Sept.11-15. It was the first time sailing as a platinum Castaway Club member and our first concierge cruise. I am here to tell you that it was just the best! Excellent concierge staff (Andy, Ashley, and Ropa), excellent cabin stewards, excellent servers, excellent food. We never felt so safe as we did on the cruise and on Castaway Cay. We are anxiously counting the days til our sailing from Miami in November.

My MIL will be 75 on the 20th and was with us on the 3nt Dream 8/20…sailing with us today 10/2 🥳🥳🥳 on the Fantasy… and is booked to sail again with us 10/26 on the Fantasy… definitely felt safe on our last cruise…they’ve only been sailing with approx 1/4 capacity so if anything there is definitely the ability to socially distance and they are great about keeping the ship clean.

We just got back from an Alaskan cruise (NOT DCL), and DH & I were some of the youngest on board for sure. Definitely an older crowd. Ship was just under 70% capacity from what we were told, so from what we could see, yes, seniors were sailing.

DW and I are mid-70s. We have 7 cruises booked for 2022, b2b on the Magic from Miami in January, b2b on the Wonder Vancouver-Hawaii-Vancouver in April and May, and b2b2b on the Magic Norwegian Fjords-Briish Isles-Westbound Transatlantic in September. Making up for lost cruises in 2020 and 2021. We’re vaccinated and expect to get a booster sometime in the coming month or so.

So great to hear people trying to enjoy themselves again. I am 68 and hubby is 74...love to sail on DCL and missing it so much. Have one booked for November 15th the 1st one since covid on the Dream, in 2022 two cruises; September on the Wish and an 8 night in October on the Fantasy. We are just trying to decide if we should go this November or wait until next year. Thank you all for your input with so many positive thoughts. We are leaning towards going!

Just off the Dream yesterday and there were quite a few "older folks" cruising. There were under 1200 guests onboard and a good portion were seniors. Many less kids than I have seen in a long time. It was very surreal being on a ship with so few people. At one point my husband was the ONLY person in the water at CC on the family beach. I will post pics when I have them downloaded. The indoor mask protocol was annoying to me but of course if I want to cruise it is what it is. What I thought was totally silly was having to wear a mask on the OPEN AIR tram on CC and they were only filling every other row. The lines were quite long for the tram. That made no sense to me. You didn't need them at CC other than the tram, food location, and shop.
