Are Northern Girls Really Different from Southern Girls?

Dawn,

ECU has a reputation of being a party school. At one time, if you couldn't get into a larger university you could always get into EASY U. I don't know if this is still true today. Standards may be stricter.

I think it shows maturity that your niece is taking control of her education and is going where she will be happy. Life is too short to spend 3 more years being miserable.

I agree wholeheartedly. In my area, about 2 hours from Greenville, about 1/2 of the kids will at least attempt to get into ECU because it is supposed to have that type of reputation. We have gone to several football games, and the tailgaters and the fans make me want to agree that having a good time means a lot to the Pirates!

But, in the last few years, I do hear of less and less kids with teaching degrees and more and more are gravitating toward the medical offerings there. So, who knows...maybe it is a whole different world for someone who is very serious about their education. And maybe in a few years ECU will be less known for being a party school. Maybe that is the difference for your niece. Maybe she is in it for an education and is not surrounded enough by those who are as interested in it? Less of a North/South thing.

I think to a great degree it's the particular school that doesn't fit her. I've lived in North Carolina my entire life, and I would probably have cultural shock if I went to East Carolina!

I was at a play here in Atlanta several years ago and there was a group of ladies sitting behind me who had all moved here from Ohio. They were talking about how much they loved Atlanta but then one of them asked: "How do you deal with the natives"? This lady replied, "I don't unless I have to". They then went on a tangent about how stupid, ignorant and redneck southerners are. They brought out every negative stereotype they could think of and I, a native southerner, had to sit and listen to this. It never occured to them that the "natives" sitting around them could hear them (or maybe they thought we were too stupid to comprehend). After about 10 minutes of this I had enough, turned around and politely told them that as stupid as we are, we southerners at least have enough manners to not denigrate an entire people in the middle of a theatre. They just looked at me with their mouths open.
My blood still boils when I think about it.

I've lived in a few places around the country. The people that I met were all nice.

Northeners for the most part were a bit more reserved but all were very nice.
I think their cautiousness in mistaken for standoffishness.

Spend 5 minutes with a Southerner and you'll feel like you're being interviewed. It's not being nosy. The info is mentally filed. They never forget and it does make you feel special that they remember.

When I lived in Telluride in the 70's, everyone was a hippy, so although pepole were friendly, everyone was too stoned to remember names. Talk about a "Rocky Mountain High". It was the prettiest place that I've lived.
